Description

A 2023 report from UNICEF estimates there are 35.5 million migrant children worldwide, the highest number of migrant children ever recorded. Every year, tens of thousands of children journey alone to the United States fleeing violence, war, political upheaval, and poverty with more than 535,000 unaccompanied immigrant children encountered by Customs and Border Protection at the U.S.-Mexico border since 2020. For more than fifteen years, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) has created meaningful protections for children, informed policy changes, and offered direct legal and psychosocial services. With renewed Corporation support, KIND will continue to represent children – whose average age is 14 – in immigration courts, respond to policy changes, and advocate for systemic reforms that promote child welfare, ensuring unaccompanied minors receive fair, compassionate treatment, and vital support services for their well-being.

With Corporation support, KIND will continue to represent children in immigration courts and advocate for systemic changes to immigration policies that promote child welfare and ensure they receive fair and compassionate treatment under the law.

Description

Despite the growing number of unaccompanied migrant children fleeing to the United States for safety from violence and danger in their home countries, the federal government has in recent years dismantled a system of policies, laws, and institutional funding designed to safeguard their well-being and protect their fundamental rights. Duration

Description

Unaccompanied children continue to flee to the United States in significant numbers due to escalating violence and dangers in their home countries, much of it perpetrated by gangs, traffickers, and other criminal groups. Yet, long-standing policies and funding meant to provide access to justice and safety for unaccompanied migrant children are at great risk. In addition, more than 60 percent of these youth are unable to access pro bono legal representation, without which they are five times more likely to be deported back to the dangerous situations they fled. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) provides legal services, advocacy, and strategic communications aimed at assisting unaccompanied immigrant children seeking refuge in the United States. With Corporation support, KIND will continue to offer legal aid and social services to vulnerable children facing deportation proceedings, as well as educate policymakers and the public about the impacts of policy changes on the children’s well-being and safety.

Description

Unaccompanied children continue to flee to the United States from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras in significant numbers due to escalating violence and danger in their home countries, much of it perpetrated by gangs, narco-traffickers, human traffickers, and other criminal groups. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) provides advocacy, legal services, and strategic communications aimed at assisting unaccompanied immigrant children seeking refuge in the United States. Immigrants with access to such legal representation are five times as likely to receive relief from deportation than those without. With Corporation support, KIND will continue to offer legal aid for children in deportation proceedings, well-informed and comprehensive media coverage, pragmatic policy recommendations in response to this ongoing crisis, and advocacy for sustaining and expanding foreign assistance to Central America to address root causes of child migration.

Description

Although it began in 2011, the large number of unaccompanied children fleeing violence in Central America and seeking refuge in the United States did not catch the attention of journalists, policymakers, and the public until 2014. Rather than responding to this crisis by offering asylum to migrant children, the Obama Administration has sought to limit opportunities for these children to make their case for asylum in accordance with U.S. law and has instead expedited the removal process. Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) provides advocacy, legal services, and strategic communications aimed at assisting unaccompanied immigrant children seeking refuge in the United States. With Corporation support, KIND will continue to offer legal aid for children in deportation proceedings, well-informed and comprehensive media coverage, and pragmatic policy recommendations in response to this ongoing crisis.
