Description
Opened in 1971, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the only official memorial to President John F. Kennedy in Washington, DC. It presents a year-round program of dance, drama, music, and opera from the United States and abroad. The Center’s national education programs provide arts experiences for people of all ages and abilities from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since its inception, The Kennedy Center has unlocked doors to arts learning for millions of young people, families, and teachers, and has been at the forefront of making arts education accessible to students. Over the next three years, the Kennedy Center will create pre-professional arts training and career development programs for emerging artists, and provide students with arts experiences and materials to support arts education and arts integration on a national scale.

In the 50 years since it opened in 1971, the Kennedy Center has been a leader for the arts across America and around the world, reaching and connecting with artists andinspiring and educating communities. Today, the Center servesmore than 2million patrons each year, and reaches1.4 million students and teachers in all 50 states through its educational programs. The Center’s 50th anniversary season will celebrate cultural leaders past, present, and future through performances, artist residencies, leadership accelerator programs, and recognition opportunities. Through these initiatives, and with Corporation support, the Center will provide direct financial and infrastructural resources for artists to develop interventions into social systems, commission original artistic works, inspire debate and critical conversation, and provide a national platform for cultural leadership.

The Kennedy Center is recognized as aunique arts organization, presenting a wide variety of performances and an array of educational initiatives. The Center’s Education division leverages the arts to address education challenges, accelerate best practices in arts learning and disability, build community, and uplift citizen artistry.In these times of uncertainty and upheaval, the Center is working closely with schools, state and local education agencies, and partner organizations to identify strategies and resources to ensure the continued provision of the arts in education. With Corporation support, the Center will implement learnings from a national needs’ assessment, provide high-quality professional learning to educators, curate and develop digital-learning resources, and offer strategic supportfor school- or district-wide projects.
