Description

The Institute of International Education (IIE) has administered the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) since 2013, linking African-born scholars in the U.S. and Canada with universities across Africa to strengthen capacity and foster collaboration. Over twelve years, CADFP has supported over 700 fellowships at more than 200 institutions, building a notable model for academic diaspora engagement. With Corporation support, IIE will implement the final phase of CADFP, focusing on alumni engagement, program close-out, and sustainability efforts. Activities will include webinars, newsletters, a commemorative convening, a Legacy Book, and the establishment of a transition fund that will enable a diaspora-led entity, steered by alumni of the program and its advisory council, to carry the program forward.

Description

The rapid expansion of higher education in Africa has led to challenges in teaching quality, relevance of curricula, and research activity. In this context, the African academic diaspora represents an intellectual resource for capacity-building and innovation by enabling new forms of knowledge generation; access to research networks, laboratories, and materials; and additional sources of research funding. Since 2013, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) has offered over 650 diaspora fellowships at 190 African universities, supporting teaching and joint research, postgraduate training and mentorship, curriculum development, and in-person and virtual conferences. With Corporation renewed support, CADFP will offer 105 diaspora fellowships, further expanding opportunities for academic diasporaexchange.

In response to domestic political developments and increasing strains in the Sino-American relationship, the Corporation, together with other funders with China-related programming, including the Ford Foundation,Henry Luce Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and Harvard-Yenching Institute, are collectively supporting a one-timeacademic exchange program between the United States and China managed through the Institute for International Education.Together, the funders will support over forty-eight students and scholars engaged in an exchange. The Corporation’s funding will be earmarked for U.S.-based participants in the program.

To respond to high demand from threatened scholars affected by conflict and repression of academic freedomin the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region, IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund places promising professors, researchers, and public intellectuals at safe academic institutions around the world. IIE uses a network of more than 9,000 international partners in the academic, human rights, diplomatic, and humanitarian relief sectors to help identify scholars in need as well as academic hosts able to offer them temporary appointments. With continued support, IIE will continue the program with a focus on the Middle East and some neighboring countries and will strengthen and expand partnerships with academic associationsfocused on the Arab region.

The student population in sub-Saharan Africa is projected to double each decade until 2050, necessitating an expansion of higher education faculty on the continent. In this context, the academic diaspora represents an intellectual resource for capacity-building and innovation. Since 2013, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP) has offered 528 diaspora fellowships at 168 African universities, supporting joint research and teaching, postgraduate training, curriculum development, and in-person and virtual conferences. With Corporation support, CADFP will offer 115 diaspora fellowships, further expanding opportunities for academic diaspora exchange.

To aid refugee resettlement efforts in the United States, the Institute of International Education (IIE) is launching a scholarship fund for refugee students. Named in honor of MacArthur Foundation’s retiring president, the Julia Stasch Fund will provide support for thirty refugee students in the Chicago area to attend community college and participate in leadership training. Many refugees who have recently relocated to the United States do not yet have the necessary skills to excel in a four-year undergraduate program. Community colleges provide an academic setting for refugee students to refine their academic and English language skills before pursuing a bachelor’s degree or entering the workforce. Higher education improves refugee’s economic mobility and social integration, benefiting refugees and the communities in which they live.

The student population is expected to double every ten years in several countries of sub-Saharan Africa over the next 30 years. Without a timely expansion in faculty development, the future quality and relevance of higher education in the region will be undermined. In this context, the academic diaspora represents a large intellectual resource for capacity building and innovation. Since 2013, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP), a partnership of The Institute of International Education (IIE) and United States International University-Africa has supported 397 diaspora fellowships at 138 institutions in participating African countries, resulting in updated curricula, increased research output, and access to funds. With continued Corporation support, CADFP will offer 138 diaspora fellowships with opportunities for academics to participate in conferences, workshops, and field work.

Description

The Institute of International Education (IIE) was established by Elihu Root, the second president of Carnegie Corporation of New York, and Nicholas Murray Butler, in the aftermath of World War I to promote greater understanding between nations through educational exchange. IIE and Carnegie Corporation have a long history history—in its early years, IIE was largely funded by the Corporation. Over the following decades, IIE and Carnegie Corporation have worked together on myriad initiatives—rescuing scholars from threat, combating fascism by spreading knowledge, developing international music and art exchange programs, researching global indicators of academic freedom, etc. The year 2019 will mark IIE’s 100th anniversary. Today, IIE continues to design and implement international exchange programs, and to expand educational access, and provide emergency assistance to students and scholars who are in jeopardy from violent conflict, persecution, or natural disasters. In honor of IIE’s centennial, the Corporation will provide general operating support to enable IIE to expand strategic initiatives such as those that enable Americans to study abroad, educate women and girls around the world, and protect education and scholarship in emergencies.

As higher education enrollment in sub-Saharan Africa grows at eight percent annually, new and expanding institutions require resources to train academic staff and seek fresh means to catalyze systemic change. In this context, the academic diaspora represents a large intellectual resource. Since 2013, the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP), a partnership of The Institute of International Education (IIE) and United States International University-Africa has supported 274 diaspora fellowships at 102 institutions in participating African countries. With continued support from the Corporation, CADFP will offer approximately 123 new fellowships and provide opportunities to additional academics to participate in conferences, workshops, and field work.

Description

With the current crisis in Syria stretching into its sixth year, the Institute of International Education (IIE) continues to work collaboratively to reach students whose education has been disrupted or delayed, getting them back into school and building a pathway to a better future. In addition to those whom IIE is already helping, their aim is to support an additional 200 students over two years to continue or complete their studies through IIE’s Emergency Student Fund in support of Syrian higher education. This grant covers approximately twenty-seven one-year fellowships. In addition to distributing the funds, IIE identifies universities around the world that will host and support students and coordinates the outreach, recruitment, and selection of students using independent panels of experts. IIE will also maintain and enhance relationships with the universities in the U.S. and overseas, and oversee monitoring.
