Description

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (IU) proposes to strengthen the scholarly community in African philanthropic studies by convening African scholars at the 2025 Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) annual conference. Building on a separate Corporation-supported workshop hosted by IU, this project will extend the scholars’ engagement and networking opportunities through conference participation and a roundtable session on African philanthropy. Outputs will include a convening report, an edited volume authored by participating scholars, and article publications.

Description

Philanthropy has a long-existing history in African communities. However, the formalization of the field of philanthropic studies has onlyrecentlyemerged in Africa. Indiana University’s Lilly School of Philanthropy (LFSOP) seeks toimprove and increase the understanding of philanthropy globallyby offering education, training, and research to students and practitionersglobally. With Corporation Support, LFSOP will facilitate research on philanthropy in Africa and provide training, capacity building, and network strengthening opportunities for emerging African scholars in philanthropic studies, in partnership with African institutions focused on philanthropy.

Description

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy (IU)seeks to advance knowledge and practice of philanthropy globally. IU has collaborated with a network of local and global researchers to launch the 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index (GPEI), providing insights on how the philanthropic context is changing in the continent by generating knowledge on philanthropy in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on higher education. With Corporation support, and along with Africa-based partners, IU will conduct research to inform a white paper directed at African higher education philanthropy stakeholders, engage stakeholders in onein-person and two virtual convenings to advance knowledge and practice of philanthropy for higher education in Sub-Saharan Africa, and disseminate findings at academic conferences and at an African philanthropy forum.

Description

Since the end of the Cold War, the study of Russian domestic, economic, political, and security developments has atrophied at American universities, leading to diminished capacity in the United States to assess and understand Russia. To expand and deepen both the study of and training on Russia within U.S. academic institutions, the Corporation supports a few Russian area studies programs, including at Indiana University (IU).In this next and final grant phase, IU will continue a variety of advanced research and training programs including seminars, fellowships, visiting appointments, and research publications to integrate scholars at various stages of their careers into an international network based on a shared commitment to research onRussia.

Description

As the United States, Russia, China, and other great powers position themselves to defend their space-based assets, and a number of private businesses seek to capitalize on business opportunities, space is rapidly emerging as a significant zone of military and economic competition. The multilateral legal frameworks governing behavior in space are woefully outdated, increasing uncertainty in an already volatile environment. To address this, the Ostrom workshop at Indiana University will study the applicability of other polycentric governance models to the space domain. The project will result in policy recommendations, publications, and briefings for policy and public stakeholders.

Description

Description

The number of high net worth individuals in Africa grew by 150 percent between 2000 and 2013, more than double the global rate according to a 2014 Africa Wealth Report. Remittances by African diaspora to their region or country of origin reached $35.2 billion in 2015, over three times the amount of aid given to the continent according to the World Bank. Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis seeks to advance knowledge of how the philanthropic context is changing in the continent by generating knowledge on African philanthropy and remittances in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on African higher education. Corporation support will contribute to expanding an Index of Philanthropic Freedom and an Index of Global Philanthropy and Remittances within Africa, and disseminate findings at academic conferences and at an African philanthropy forum.

Description

To advance long-term relations between the United States and Russia and improve knowledge about Russian society in the United States, the Corporation launched an initiative to strengthen the study of Russia at U.S. universities. One of the projects recommended is this grant to Indiana University (Indiana). Already a leader in international research and training for Russian studies, Indiana now will function as an incubator, training center, and hub of knowledge production on contemporary Russia. It will build a research collective and renovate the model of regional studies; hold brainstorming sessions to explore ways to understand emerging events in Russian society, politics, and economics; and design programming around new modes of writing. Indiana will work to build a regional studies toolkit, with language, historical knowledge, and professional networks.
