The conflict in Syriahas hada devastating and long-lasting impact on young people and the education sector. In 2013, the NGO Global Platform for Syrian Students wasestablishedwith the aim of designing and implementing an emergency scholarship program for Syrian students.In August 2020, the organization changed its name toGlobal Platform for Higher Education in Emergencies to reflect its broader mission.With funding from the Corporation and other sources, Global Platform will aim to expand its scholarship programs to reach an increasing number of beneficiaries,develop a rapid response funding mechanism, and promote multilateral action on sustaining higher education in emergencies.

Description
The conflict in Syria continues to have a devastating and long-lasting impact on young people and the education sector. The Global Platform for Syrian Students is a multi-stakeholder initiative that provides academic opportunities for Syrian students to complete a graduation cycle. Corporation funds will support scholarships for twenty Syrian students to study in Lebanon and Portugal. Funds will also support a summer school program on “Rebuilding Syria from Within” for up to 100 Syrian students, architects, engineers, and urban planners with experience in rehabilitation, recovery, and reconstruction. Finally, the Corporation will support a variety of events aimed at boosting higher education opportunities for students at risk in coordination with other relevant stakeholders.

As the conflict in Syria enters its sixth year, it is having a devastating and long-lasting impact on young people and the education sector. The Global Platform for Syrian Students is a multi-stakeholder initiative that provides academic opportunities for Syrian students to complete a graduation cycle. Corporation funds mainly go to student costs; a full package of education services is being provided to Syrian students to complete higher education programs at institutions outside Syria. In addition, the organization is scaling up its policy development and intergovernmental outreach to build a Rapid Response Mechanism for Higher Education in Emergencies.
