Description
Tango is an evidence-based civic bridge-building initiative founded in 2018 in the Harvard University laboratory of Joshua Greene. Through a cooperative online quiz game, Tango pairs participants from different political, religious, racial, or geographic backgrounds and asks them to work together as teammates rather than debate one another. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour, based on five randomized controlled trials involving approximately 5,000 participants, found that less than one hour of gameplay reduced polarization and increased cross-partisan respect, with effects lasting at least four months. To date, approximately 15,000 individuals have participated through public games and deployments at more than a dozen colleges and universities. With Carnegie support, Tango will expand through higher education institutions, civic and community organizations, public libraries, and high school settings. The organization will develop new partnerships, create age-appropriate content for adolescents, and conduct additional research and evaluation. The proposed work aligns with Carnegie’s Civic Participation strategy by helping young people and adults build the trust, relationships, and experiences needed to engage constructively across differences.
