Description

The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) was established in 2012 by Liberian peace activist, trained social worker, Nobel Peace Laureate, and Carnegie Corporation trustee Leymah Gbowee. GPFA aims toprovide women and youth with outstanding education and leadership opportunities, empowering a population committed to a transformed, peaceful, reconciledAfrica. However, outside the classroom, students do not always have access to the most basic needs, such as adequate food, healthcare, and shelter, along with protection from physical and sexual abuse which has been on the rise in recent years. To meetthese requirements, the GPFA purchased 12 acres of land on which to build two dormitories that will accommodate 40 students, aninnovation and technology lab, conference rooms, a kitchen, a study hall, and library. Arable land has been set aside for scholars to practice and teach crop maintenance and animal husbandry. With Corporation support, the Gbowee Peace Foundation will finish the architectural and structural phase of the project. A brick-making machine has already been purchased and is being used to not only facilitate the construction project, but to sell the finished product to otherswho are in need of building materials.

Date

Sep. 08, 2016

Duration

36 months

Description

Women play often unrecognized roles in building peace and contributing to their countries’ development. Leymah Gbowee, 2011 Nobel Laureate, set up the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa to ensure that women and youth receive the support they need to become socially and politically active, make decisions, and shape policies. This grant will provide seventeen women annually with scholarships to study at Liberian universities. It will also support the costs of twenty-two women—drawn from civil society organizations, government ministries and agencies, academic institutions, and international organizations—to participate in an annual meeting of women in peacebuilding in West and Central Africa. The focus countries are Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.
