Description
Following the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder (2013), which gutted key protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, voter suppression efforts have been on the rise in state legislatures. These efforts include purging voters from election rolls, restrictive voter identification laws, limiting voter registration initiatives, and closing polling locations that serve historically underrepresented communities. Founded in 2006 as the Fair Elections Legal Network, the Fair Elections Center is a nonpartisan organization that protects voting rights and advocates for election reforms that remove barriers for traditionally underrepresented constituencies, including communities of color, immigrants, low-income individuals, and young people. The center also oversees the national Campus Vote Project, which works with national and state organizations and college campuses to increase student participation in elections. With Corporation support, the Fair Elections Center will employ a range of different strategies, including litigation, technical assistance, and rapid response coordination.
Project Title
For an initiative to expand voting access for underrepresented constituencies, including young people
Date

Duration

Description
In the 2014 midterm elections, college student voter turnout was 19.9 percent, a testament to the challenges young voters face when navigating an unfamiliar election process often coupled with policies that discourage their participation. In the 2016 general election, their turnout was 48.3 percent, an indication that young voters actively exercise their right to vote when equipped with the resources and information they need. The Fair Elections Center is a nonpartisan voting rights, legal support and election reform organization committed to removing barriers to voting for traditionally underrepresented constituencies. In addition to using litigation to remove obstacles to voter participation, the center works with hundreds of colleges and educational institutions across the country to educate and mobilize tens of thousands of student voters. With Corporation support, the Fair Elections Center will engage in efforts to expand voting access and protect voting rights for young voters.
