Description

There remain long-standing inequities in the education system, and while some schools seek to disrupt these inequities, entire school systems must be transformed to challenge, engage, and empower all students and foster belonging, agency, and a purpose in learning. Research shows that to rectify inequities and establish this transformative approach to learning, high-quality, culturally affirming instructional materials and curriculum-based professional learning are critical in shifting the mindsets of teachers and district leaders. EL Education offers both a newly revised K-8 English language arts program and curriculum-based professional learning to schools and districts. Through this general support grant and informed by their four-year strategic plan, EL Education will continue to provide educators and districts with their transformative programming.

Duration

Description

Multiple education professionals, such as school and district leaders and district coaches, have key roles in supporting teachers’ effective implementation of high-quality and standards aligned curriculum. Yet, although these professionals provide instructional leadership and conduct classroom observations providing teachers with feedback and reflection opportunities, professional learning for school and district leaders and coaches linked to the use of high-quality curriculum is not yet the norm. Through this renewal grant, EL Education plans to: (a) collect data about strengths and weaknesses in EL Education’s approach to providing supports to district coaches and school and district leaders; (b) develop a learning progression about what education professionals need to know and do to be able to support implementation of EL Education’s curriculum across multiple education roles; (c) build the capacity of EL Education’s staff to do this work; and (d) share lessons learned with five partner professional learning organizations that support districts’ implementation of EL Education’s curriculum and the field at large.

Project Title

For a project to expand district partnerships and build capacity of a national model for job-embedded professional learning opportunities for K-8 teachers implementing high quality English Language Arts instructional materials

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

There is a growing national focus, spurred by an emerging body of research, on the power of thoughtful alignment between high-quality instructional materials and job-embedded professional learning for teachers as a lever for raising student achievement. Yet this kind of impactful professional development is not yet the norm. Through this proposal, EL Education plans to tackle this challenge, accelerating its teacher development at scale, and aiming to provide a national model for other professional development providers. EL Education plans to build on its highly rated K-8 English Language Arts curriculum to partner with five to seven districts to both implement their curriculum and engage in a series of professional learning offerings to build the capacity for district level coaches and teacher leaders to support teachers.
