Educators for Excellence

Duration

Description

Educators for Excellence (E4E)aims to solve the lack of teacher voices in education policy decisions. While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. Even though policymakers at every level of the system talk about teachers, they rarely talk with teachers. Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence (E4E) is a growing movement of more than 30,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. With renewed support from the Corporation, E4E will work with their National Teacher Leader Council, a two-year cohort made up of outstanding teacher leaders to inform a broad swath of E4E’s policy and organizing work, including the National Policy Agenda, their national teacher survey Voices from the Classroom, and national advocacy campaigns to support high-quality instructional materials supported with curriculum-based professional development.

Description

We know from abundant research that teacher quality is among the most important in-school factors in student achievement and that by raising the quality and prestige of the teaching profession, we will improve student outcomes. Given the pivotal role that teachers will play in how students recover from the disruption due to the pandemic, academically, as well as socio-emotionally, it is imperative that we listen to and amplify these voices from the front line – the voices students hear each day, the voices on the phone to families, and the voices speaking up for students needs within their school. Educators for Excellence (E4E) founded by public school teachers in 2010, is a growing movement of more than 34,000 educators united around a commitment to improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. With a final grant of $500,000 from the Corporation, E4E teachers will work to meet this extraordinary moment and to ensure lasting change for students and communities who deserve equitable public-school systems. They will elevate teachers’ voices on recovery priorities across the field and within our chapter locations, building teacher power to change both policy and the public narrative, with a particular focus on how we can reimagine the teaching profession with teachers, and specifically through the collective power of teachers’ unions.

Description

Now more than ever, policymakers, education leaders, and the broader public are acknowledging the critical importance of teachers, naming them among the “frontline” workers of the pandemic. Moreover, abundant research shows that teacher quality is one of the important in-school factors in student achievement, and we know that by raising the quality and prestige of the teaching profession, we will positively impact student outcomes. Yet for far too long, education policy has been created largely without the critical voices of classroom teachers at the table. Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence (E4E) is a growing movement of more than 33,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. With continued support from the Corporation, E4E teachers will work with educators to identify the pressing issues impacting their schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to quality education.

Description

Every child deserves the opportunity to receive an excellent education, yet millions of students across the country aren’t receiving the educational opportunities that will prepare them for college and their careers—a fact significantly exacerbated by the drastic interruptions to learning created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now more than ever, policymakers, education leaders, and the broader public are acknowledging the critical importance of teachers, naming them among the “frontline” workers of the pandemic. Moreover, abundant research shows that teacher quality is among one of the most important in-school factors in student achievement. Yet for far too long, education policy has been created largely without a critical voice at the table—the voice of classroom teachers. With continuing support from the Corporation, E4E will work to ensure lasting change for students and communities battered not just by the pandemic, but also by generations of inequity and systemic racism. They will work with educators to identify the pressing issues impacting their schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to quality education.

Description

All children deserve the opportunity to receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college and careers, but millions of students are not receiving this opportunity. Teachers are the most important in-school factor in influencing student achievement, and elevating the teaching profession is therefore a critical way in improving student achievement. However, the process of shaping education policy has left out the voices of teachers, while teachers unions, which aim to serve as a vehicle for elevating the voices of educators, do not wholly represent them nor respond to the priorities of all their teacher-members. Educators for Excellence (E4E) began in 2010 by a small group of teachers recognizing the need to change the way education policies were formulated. Today, E4E includes nearly 32,000 educators in six major cities, joining together to improve student learning and to elevate the teaching profession. With continued support from the Corporation, E4E will identify issues that impact schools, create solutions to these challenges, train new teachers to be leaders within their unions, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education.

Description

For parents, communities, and the public at large, teachers are the most trusted source of information on student achievement because they have first-hand experience engaging with the students. Research shows that the most important in-school instrument in raising student achievement is teacher quality too. Despite their unique vantage point, teachers across the country are struggling to effectively have their voices heard in ways that would improve policies and practices that best serve their students. Educators for Excellence (E4E), founded by a small group of New York City teachers in 2010, has grown to a movement of 28,770 educators across the country using their insights and experiences to recommend and design policies, take leadership positions within unions and their communities, and run campaigns that pass and implement these policies on behalf of the profession and the future of their students. E4E has six chapters in Boston, Chicago, Connecticut, Los Angeles, Minnesota, and New York, and with renewed Corporation support, will deepen its impact across its chapters and the nation.

Description

Teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor in student achievement. Yet while policymakers and education leaders acknowledge the importance of teachers, their actual voices are consistently left out of policies that directly impact them and their ability to improve student learning. Motivated by a widespread desire to be heard in policy debates, Bronx teachers Sydney Morris and Evan Stone founded Educators for Excellence (E4E) in March 2010, an entirely teacher-led organization initiating bottom-up reform. The Corporation supported E4E in its early stages to create a comprehensive theory of change and growth strategy. E4E currently operates in six major cities and includes over 26,000 educators united in their mission to influence key policies, such as teacher evaluation, layoff, and tenure systems. Critical to E4E’s theory of change is the belief that union leadership inadequately represents the views of its members. With 86 percent of its members belonging to unions, E4E fills this representational void by training teacher-leaders and mobilizing their collective voice for change within unions and the broader public. The Corporation’s grant will enable E4E to develop its organizational capacity at national and local levels, scale its model, and support its activities.

Date

Duration

Description

Abundant research shows that teacher quality is the single most important in-school factor in student achievement, and we know that by raising the quality of the teaching profession, we will positively impact student outcomes. Yet for far too long, education policy has been created without a critical voice at the table – the voice of classroom teachers, leading to a culture of distrust or “reform fatigue” amongst current classroom teachers and a lack of educator ownership that limits the long-term effectiveness of reforms. Educators for Excellence (E4E), a teacher-led organization, is changing this dynamic by placing the voices of teachers at the forefront of the conversations that shape our classrooms and the teaching profession. This grant supports strategic planning for E4E, in addition to their core programmatic work in on-the-ground organizing, training teacher leaders, creating and publicizing policy recommendations, and scaling their model.
