Project Title
As a final grant to conduct reviews of high school and elementary science instructional materials
Date
Sep. 12, 2024
Duration
36 months
Description
EdReports is a national leader providing evidence-based reviews of full-course curricula in mathematics and English language arts. They publish freely available, educator-led reviews of instructional materials claiming alignment to college and career ready standards. Through their previous and current grants, EdReports has expanded their capabilities to review science instructional materials, conducting twenty-three reviews of science curricula and finding only one elementary curriculum, two middle school curricula, and one high school biology curriculum that are standards-aligned. This third-party evaluation helps school and district leaders make more informed choices for curriculum adoption in their classrooms. Further Corporation support will allow them to review forthcoming science curricula, including OpenSciEd’s elementary and high school curricula.

Description
Given the successful adoption of new science standards across the country, most students attend schools that aim to teach science ways that reflect the innovations and vision of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Standards aligned instructional materials provide the best opportunity to move the implementation of the Framework and NGSS forward. Yet, the complex nature of all curricular innovations has resulted in confusion in the field of what is high-quality. This creates a need for an arbiter to carry out an independent third-part evaluation to help discern between high-quality NGSS instructional materials and those not in alignment with the NGSS. EdReports is a national leader providing evidence-rich reviews of full-course curricula. The independent non-profit publishes freely available, educator-led reviews of materials claiming alignment to college and career ready standards. Through this grant, EdReports will increase the demand for and availability of high-quality instructional materials and expand into their reviews in K-12 science education.

Description
Given the successful adoption of new science standards across the U.S., over 80 percent of students attend schools that aim to teach science in ways that reflect the innovations and vision of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Standards aligned instructional materials provide the best chance to move the implementation of the Framework and NGSS forward. Yet, the complex nature of all curricular innovations has resulted in confusion in the field on what is high-quality. EdReports is a national leader providing evidence-rich reviews of full-course curricula. The independent non-profit publishes free, educator-led reviews of materials claiming alignment to college and career ready standards. This project will: (a) shape smart demand in K-8 science; (b) support research into the K-12 science materials market; and (c) conduct a review on all fifty states’ high school science policies to be shared with the field.

Description
With the creation and adoption of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics there was an increase in curricula on the market claiming alignment to these higher standards. EdReports, an independent nonprofit, seeks to improve K-12 education by providing free, educator-led reviews of instructional materials to college and career-ready standards. EdReports supports states, districts, and educators as they make decisions about curriculum adoption. This grant will support EdReports’ recent expansion to reviewing science curricula to aid the nearly forty states who have adopted new science standards based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In this grant, EdReports proposes to 1) continue to review middle school science materials; 2) expand their reviews to include K-5 science materials; and 3) promote their science reviews.

Description
EdReports is an independent nonprofit organization whose goal is to help improve K-12 education through free, educator-led reviews of instructional materials claiming alignment to college and career ready standards. They seek to increase the capacity of teachers and leaders to identify and demand the highest quality instructional materials. This grant will build upon the successful track record EdReports has produced in shaping smart demand in math and English language arts (ELA) to support expansion into reviews of science instructional materials. With the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) adopted or adapted in thirty-eight states and the District of Columbia, educators are grappling with how to translate the three dimensions of science learning into their practice. As EdReports found in its reviews of math and ELA materials, claiming alignment does not necessarily result in materials that address the instructional shifts necessary to support students. Providing comprehensive, evidence-rich reviews of new and retrofitted materials will be essential to ensuring districts do not invest in or continue to use instructional materials that do not facilitate the science learning that students need.
