For providing work-based learning opportunities to high school students

Date

Jun. 09, 2022

Duration

12 months

Description

While the nation has made impressive strides toward greater high school completion, college and career readiness have not kept pace and achievement gaps remain. In response to these gaps, the Corporation has long articulated the need for a more robust high school experience that blends academic and applied learning. DreamYard Project, Inc. (DreamYard) has over two decades of experience engaging a broad coalition of stakeholders to transform the educational and career pathways available to students in the Bronx. Prior Corporation support enabled DreamYard to launch HERE to HERE, which is now an independent organization bridging the gap between education and the world of work, and to support a network of ten partner schools providing work-based learning (WBL) opportunities to their students. Continued support will allow DreamYard to expand WBL opportunities for high school students in the Bronx, create the tools and resources needed for schools to implement WBL, and develop a WBL demonstration site to share learning with other schools across the city.

Duration

Description

Students in underserved communities are less likely than their peers to be connected to opportunities and resources that align their high school experiences to what they will need to be successful in college and career.  With support from the Corporation in 2017, DreamYard Project Inc. (DreamYard) launched Here to Here (H2H) to address this challenge by coordinating efforts across the secondary, postsecondary, and career sectors such that students in the Bronx have access to work-based learning opportunities while in high school.  Together, DreamYard and H2H, which is now an independent organization, have established a network of ten partner high schools and supported them to provide internships and work-based learning (WBL) opportunities to their students.  In the summer of 2018 alone, 1,055 students participated in paid internship experiences.  With renewed Corporation support, these organizations will continue to partner with one another and with cross-sector actors to provide high-quality WBL, internship, and apprenticeship opportunities to Bronx students.

For support of the Here to Here initiative, a multi-sector partnership network committed to providing work-based experiential learning opportunities to high school students in the Bronx

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

Better alignment between what students are expected to know and be able to do in high school and what they need to be successful in college and career will require coordinated efforts across the secondary, postsecondary, and career sectors such that students have access to personalized, real-world learning experiences while in high school. DreamYard Project, Inc. (DreamYard) has over two decades of experience engaging a broad coalition of local stakeholders to build pathways to equity and opportunity for students in the Bronx. Building on this experience, DreamYard is now launching a new program, Here to Here (H2H), a multi-sector partnership network committed to providing work-based experiential learning opportunities to high school students in the Bronx. With Corporation support, DreamYard will develop, refine, and implement the H2H program; build and steward a partnership network of multi-sector actors; and complete a formative study and prepare for a long term program evaluation to inform H2H improvement and the field at large.
