Description
Today, more than a quarter of voting-eligible Americans are not registered to vote. This is partly because many states do not comply with various aspects of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), resulting in missed opportunities to bring millions of people into the democratic process, especially people from low-income households and communities of color. In addition, local and state governments have sought to remove registered voters from their rolls in what are known as “voter purges,” which further depress voter participation. Founded in 2000, Dēmos is a nonprofit public policy organization working to build a just, inclusive multiracial democracy and economy. It advances policy solutions, research, legal advocacy, and narrative strategies to build civic and economic power. With renewed Corporation support, Dēmos will work with partners to remove barriers to full democratic and civic participation by all and advance voting rights for disenfranchised groups.

Through research, field investigations, lawsuits, and negotiations, Demos has helped millions of Americans obtain or regain access to voter services guaranteed under the NVRA. Description
Approximately fifty million voting-eligible Americans are not registered to vote, and many people face unnecessary barriers to exercising their constitutional right to participate in the democratic process. In 2018, at least seventy bills restricting voting access have been introduced or passed, in twenty-four states. These bills discourage student voting, restrict absentee voting, and remove registered voters from rolls, among other provisions. Moreover, inadequate political engagement with low propensity voters has contributed to low turnout in districts where stakes are high for their communities. Since 2000, Demos (also spelled, Dēmos) has been promoting a positive voting agenda across the country. Through field investigations, lawsuits, and negotiations, Demos has helped millions of individuals access critical voter services guaranteed under the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993. With Corporation support, Demos will coordinate efforts to protect voting rights and expand voting access for all Americans. Demos will also work with the Black Futures Lab’s Black Census Project to collect data on issues facing Black communities across the country.

Description
The National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) requires state agencies offering social services as well as department of motor vehicle offices to offer clients an opportunity to register to vote. Along with numerous state laws allowing residents to register and vote on the same day or that automatically register voters when they become eligible, these policies are important tools that can be used to increase voter participation. But implementation of the NVRA–enacted in 1993–has been inconsistent among various state agencies. Established in 2000, Demos uses research, advocacy, litigation, and strategic communications to reduce political and economic inequality. With Corporation support, Demos will dismantle structural barriers to voting by pushing for full compliance with the NVRA and expanding the number of states with automatic and same-day voter registration policies.
