TheCouncil of American Overseas Research Centers in North Africa – the American Institute for Mahgrib Studies (AIMS) and Centre d’Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) – provide mentorship, capacity building, and collaborative research opportunities to new generations of local scholars working on political, economic, and social questions and building the institutional capacity of their universities.Renewed Corporation funding will expand collaboration with and among North African researchers and universities, promote the production and dissemination of locally produced scholarship through a variety of print and digital media, and support a new cohort of young scholars to produce research on critical themes through an established set of working groups.

Recognizing the engagement of North African university faculty and departments with critical issues of the region, the Council of American Overseas Research Centers will build on earlier Corporation-supported work to expand collaboration with and among North African researchers and universities. The Centre d’Études Maghrébines en Algérie (CEMA) and Centre d’Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT) will focus on the Maghrib’s political, economic, and social conditions to promote collaborative research on regional developments, disseminate scholarship through a variety of print and electronic media, and support a new generation of scholars through capacity-building efforts. Corporation support will go toward research, scholarships, workshops, and publications.

Description
To strengthen both institutional and individual capacity for policy-relevant research on critical topics, two American Overseas Research Centers—Centre d’Études Maghrébines en Algérie (CEMA) and Centre d’Études Maghrébines à Tunis (CEMAT)—will work with university departments in North Africa to upgrade social science pedagogy and research methods. Topics of focus are structural reform, cross-border networks and labor migration, human rights, and Libyan studies. From their location within the region, CEMA/CEMAT will strengthen scholars and institutions through regularly scheduled workshops and seminars that introduce novel methodological practices, research design, and teach policy-writing techniques to specialists in the social sciences and humanities. Corporation funds will support working groups, publications, podcasts, and seminars.
