Description

Founded in 1973, CODESRIA is the premier pan-African network for social-science and humanities scholarship. This grant will support three integrated interventions: (1) Graduate-level research methodology: senior academics will design a new pan-African course, pilot it in three regions, and deliver it through a CODESRIA-hosted learning-management system; (2) Gender-responsive research and leadership: fellowships and competitive grants will fund studies of campus life and support women scholars who seek advanced degrees and leadership roles; and (3) Civic and policy engagement: CODESRIA will convene civil-society groups, university leaders, and regional bodies to build a constituency for sustainable higher-education funding and academic freedom. Outputs will include course materials, policy briefs, journal articles, podcasts, and annual monitoring reports on academic freedom.

Description

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) General Assembly isthe largest triennial gathering of social science researchers in Africa. Members come together to review the state of Africa and the world in the context of the challenges posed for social research. The 16th General Assembly will take place in Dakar, Senegal from December 12-16, 2022, with the theme “The Social Sciences and Pandemics in Africa.” An expected 400 participants from Africa and the diaspora will participate in sessions, review the functioning of the Council, and decide on its broad agenda for the next three years. Corporation support will enable thirty-eightAfrican social science and humanitiesscholars to present their papers and participate in panels on the roleof the social sciences and humanitiesin pandemic preparedness and responses.

The expansion and growth of universities in Africa have led to shortages of senior academics and support systems to train the next generation of academics. At a disciplinary level, institutional policies and practices in most African countries continue to underfund the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in favor of science and technology. Yet the SSH are critical tosound decision-making by national governments and transnational organizations on issues of development. The presence of a large African academic diaspora can serve to strengthen SSH disciplines by assisting in teaching and research. With the Corporation’s renewed support, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa will continue to foster linkages between African diaspora academics and African universities through visiting professorships,mentorships of doctoral students, and production of knowledge on issues facing African higher education.

Description

That well-performing universities are a pre-requisite for participation in the process of knowledge creation and instruments in solving developing country challenges has been acknowledged at the global and continental policy levels by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2015-2030, and the African Union Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2016-2025. With these frameworks in place, the timing is favorable to inform and guide receptive policymakers with evidence-based research. Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is one of the few African think tanks conducting research in the social sciences and higher education in Africa. Through national and comparative research groups and dissemination, CODESRIA aims to contribute to improving the governance and quality of academic programs at African universities.
