Project Title

For a project on policy relevant research and outreach at the Global Research Institute

Date

Sep. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

The Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) project at William and Mary seeks to increase the role of IR expert knowledge in the foreign policy process by effectively communicating IR scholars’ views, data, and theories to policy officials. TRIP researchers will continue conducting surveys of international relations scholars for their insights on pressing security threats, approaches to teaching and research, and engagement with policymakers, think tanks, and nongovernmental organizations. The project will also address the “demand side” of the Bridging the Gap equation by surveying policymakers about what they find most useful in academic research. Beyond funding these activities, the Corporation will also support two post-doctoral fellows from underrepresented backgrounds, as well as outreach to journalists, policymakers, and other practitioners.

Project Title

For one-time funding for a project on regional approaches to nuclear security as part of a Request for Proposals (RFP) on "Understanding the Politics of Nuclear Weapons"

Date

Sep. 14, 2023

Duration

36 months

Description

Lack of progress towards disarmament has led an increasing number of non-nuclear weapons states to propose alternative policies for reducing nuclear dangers. These initiatives include nuclear weapons free zones, confidence-building initiatives, and nuclear verification regimes.Such regional approaches to nuclear security are not new but have been overshadowed by global regimes and agreements led by the nuclear weapons states. This project will advance knowledge of the benefits and pitfalls of regional approaches through archival research, a symposium that brings together scholars and practitioners, scholarly and policy relevant publications, and an online repository that makes information about such approaches more accessible to researchers, policymakers and civil society.

Project Title

For a project on policy relevant research at the Global Research Institute

Date

Dec. 02, 2021

Duration

33 months

Description

The many challenges facing the United States and the world could be addressed more effectively if they were grounded in logic and sound evidence. However, bringing academic research findings to bear on these challenges requires clear understandings of the pathways through which scholarly research can shape policy. The College of William & Mary’s (W&M) Global Research Institute (GRI) will institutionalize its efforts to bridge the academic-policy divide and increase scholars’ ability to engage in applied policy research. In addition to continuing the Corporation-funded Teaching, Research, and International Policy (TRIP) project that conducts surveys of scholars and practitioners on how academic products are utilized, GRI will promote more collaboration between these sectors through post-doctoral fellowships for academic diversity and investments in strategic communications targeting policy and practitioner audiences.

Project Title

For strengthening the links between scholars and practitioners of International Relations

Date

Dec. 05, 2019

Duration

24 months

Description

Through the Bridging the Gap (BtG) initiative, the International Peace and Security (IPS) program supports academics to provide rigorous research to policymakers on foreign affairs issues. Critical to the initiative is improving academics’ ability to distill and disseminate their insights to the policy community. To advance these efforts, the Teaching, Research, and International Policy Project (TRIP) at the College of William and Mary (William and Mary) conducts surveys of over 5,000 international relations (IR), foreign policy, and national security experts to assess how academic products are utilized, identify the most effective means of communication to reach the policy communities, and train academics in presenting their research in the most digestible formats. TRIP also uses its extensive contact lists to conduct broadly-disseminated “snap polls” of IR scholars on contemporary international developments.

Project Title

For a project analyzing how scholarly knowledge shapes the views of the public, the media, and policy practitioners

Date

Dec. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

In recent years, there has been growing demand from the media, scholars, and policy practitioners, for systematic quantitative data on experts’ views on contemporary international issues. The Teaching, Research and International Policy (TRIP) project at the College of William and Mary has responded by conducting large-scale surveys and establishing itself as a hub for this data. TRIP has also collected baseline data on public opinion of foreign policy issues and academic expertise. The data show that a sizable gap remains on how expert knowledge on the theory and practice of international relations affects the public, and on the media’s role in transmitting expert opinion to the public and policy officials. With renewed support, the project seeks to better understand this “theory-practice gap,” and to identify the conditions under which expert knowledge can shape the views of the public, the media, and policy practitioners.
