Date

Sep. 11, 2025

Duration

12 months

Description

National service helps young people develop into leaders, problem solvers, and more active citizens. Every year, AmeriCorps, the federal agency for national service and volunteerism, deploys more than 200,000 members in service through its nationwide programs and partnerships with nonprofits like City Year. Founded in 1988 as a national service program to unite young adults for a year of full-time community service, City Year has grown from fifty corps members in Boston to more than 2,000 members serving in twenty-nine cities in the United States. City Years serves as the operational and organizational host of Voices for National Service, the national advocacy coalition of hundreds of organizations dedicated to strengthening and expanding AmeriCorps. With Corporation support, City Year will bolster Voices for National Service to build bipartisan support for service programs.

Project Title

For project support of the development of teaching pathways

Date

Sep. 11, 2025

Duration

36 months

Description

City Year is a national organization with over thirty years of experience in improving educational quality and fostering a diverse pipeline of future educators through national service. As part of a state-wide effort in New York, this grant will leverage the City Year service year to create sustainable pathways into teaching careers. With a successful track record of serving 133,000 students in over 250 schools, and 6,000 alumni teachers who persist longer in classrooms and serve high-need areas, City Year is well-positioned to address workforce development challenges. City Year will engage 1,000 Corps Members in New York State, guiding approximately 450 towards education careers through access to their newly developed teacher pathway programs. Additionally, City Year will establish a statewide coalition to advocate for essential investments and policies, form workforce development partnerships, design apprenticeship standards, and engage local partners. The anticipated impact includes an increased number of Corps Members entering teaching careers, scaling the apprenticeship model, and positioning national service as a pre-apprenticeship experience.

Project Title

For a project to support the development of a next-generation Early Warning Indicator system and refinement of the Learner & Leader work at Compass Academy

Date

Dec. 08, 2016

Duration

6 months

Description

Two years ago, with support from the Corporation, City Year began its School Design Division (SDD). The SDD designed and launched Compass Academy, a charter middle school in Denver that leverages human capital provided by City Year AmeriCorps members, decades of youth development work, and recent advances in the learning sciences to support the holistic development of learners and leaders with the competencies needed for success in the 21st century in schools across the nation. Moving forward, City Year, in collaboration with John Hopkins University, plans to use Compass Academy as an research and development (R&D) base to develop, refine, transfer, and replicate evidence-based practices and to scale them throughout the City Year partner network of over 300 schools. This grant will enable City Year to carry out two R&D projects: 1) development of a next-generation Early Warning Indicator system that provides a comprehensive view of student progress; and 2) update and refinement of the Learner & Leader work at Compass Academy, which supports students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
