Church World Service
Project Title
For core support of its policy and advocacy programs
Date
Sep. 14, 2023
Duration
18 months
Description
Despite a goal of admitting 125,000 refugees in fiscal year 2023, the United States had only resettled roughly 25,000 refugees as of March 31st (nearly midway through the government’s fiscal year). This statistic reflects years of neglect to the refugee settlement system. While the current presidential administration has relied on temporary protections for asylum seekers, policy reform is needed to strengthen the country’s refugee and asylee systems. Founded in 1946, Church World Service (CWS) is an interfaith organization that develops sustainable programs and solutions to poverty, hunger, disaster, and displacement. It is also one of nine refugee resettlement agencies in the United States. With Corporation support, CWS will engage and develop immigrant and refugee leaders and faith community allies to advocate to their national, state, and local elected leaders for more welcoming policies.

Description
Founded in 1946, Church World Service (CWS) is an interfaith organization that develops sustainable programs and solutions to poverty, hunger, disaster, and displacement. It is also one of nine refugee resettlement agencies in the United States. With the global refugee crisis being exacerbated amidst war and global instability, CWS has been a leading advocate for structural reforms to the U.S. refugee resettlement system and for more inclusive refugee policies at the state level. CWS’ innovative policy, advocacy, and organizing programs support refugee and immigrant leadership networks across the country. With Corporation support, CWS will continue to grow and train its base of empowered refugee and immigrant leaders and advocate for pro-immigrant and pro-refugee policy solutions at the state and federal levels.

For communications and advocacy to promote pro-refugee policies at state and federal levels
Date

Duration

Description
Over the last three years, the current Administration has gutted the refugee resettlement program and asylum system. As a result of these policies and ongoing attempts to normalize anti-immigrant rhetoric in political discourse, there has been a resurgence of hate groups; and anti-immigrant, anti-refugee, and anti-Muslim efforts have become more coordinated and active. Church World Service (CWS) is an interfaith organization that was founded in 1946 to develop just and sustainable responses to global hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster. With Corporation support, CWS will work to educate local, state, and national policymakers about policies that will improve the lives of refugees, including workforce development proposals that strengthen refugee and immigrant integration, expand access to education, support emergency licensing for internationally-trained healthcare professionals, and improve language accessibility.

Description
Despite the global refugee crisis worsening—with now more than sixty-five million displaced persons around the world—the current Administration has been issuing policies that reduce and restrict the number of refugees admitted to the United States. The Administration is on track to resettling only 20,000 refugees in the current fiscal year, which is less than half of its declared cap of 45,000, already the lowest rate in United States history. Church World Service (CWS) is an interfaith organization that was founded in 1946 to develop just and sustainable responses to global hunger, poverty, displacement, and disaster. With renewed Corporation support, CWS will sustain and elevate its work with refugee communities, push back against anti-refugee and anti-Muslim sentiment, elevate the role of refugees in the public forum, and advance systemic change on national and local levels.

For a communications campaign to increase public support for refugee resettlement in the United States
Date
Sep. 08, 2016
Duration

Description
Refugee issues generally receive limited attention in the Unites States from the media and the public. The current Syrian refugee crisis as well as the increased number of children fleeing violence in Central America present opportunities for refugee advocates to educate the public and policymakers on refugee resettlement systems and the need for the country to support refugees. Established in 1946, Church World Service (CWS) is a refugee resettlement organization and has been a leader at the forefront of building field capacity of people of faith standing in solidarity with immigrant and refugee communities across the United States. With Corporation support, and in collaboration with Unbound Philanthropy, CWS will increase its policy, communications, and grassroots organizing capacity in order to expand public support for refugee resettlement and train refugee leaders and allies working to build welcoming communities.
