Description
With the recent completion of the OpenSciEd middle school science curriculum, and three state-level science adoptions coming up in 2023-24, it is a crucial time to fortify curriculum programs with aligned, high-quality interim assessments and performance tasks. Fortunately, the Lawrence Hall of Science (LHS) and Learning Tapestry have developed a set of interim assessments to be a bridge between curriculum and standardized assessments. To date, the item sets have not been aligned to the OpenSciEd curriculum and have not been externally reviewed. CenterPoint Education Solutions’ efforts are focused on improving access to high-quality curriculum and aligned assessments, and on empowering educators to use these resources through effective professional learning. Over the course of the proposed project, CenterPoint will oversee review and revisions to the LHS interim assessment items and align them to the OpenSciEd curriculum. The CenterPoint team will also conduct initial market research and planning for marketing and sales of the packaged aligned tasks.

Description
With over forty-five states adopting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or new science standards informed by the Framework for K-12 Science Education, states are prioritizing successful science education that cannot be supported or measured by current assessments that focus on memorization. Schools and systems need curriculum-aligned assessments to support teachers and district leaders in gathering data and informing instructional decisions. CenterPoint Education Solutions increases the availability of innovative, curriculum-aligned interim assessments and provides professional learning in how to best use the data from assessments. They currently work in English language arts and mathematics and are looking to expand into the middle school science market. Through this project, CenterPoint will develop and design interim assessments aligned to the OpenSciEd middle school program.

Description
Coherence and standards alignment between curriculum and interim assessments results in efficient teacher learning, use of planning time, and classroom impact. CenterPoint Education Solutions, a developer of formative assessments, EL Education, a curriculum developer and professional development provider, and Detroit Public Community Schools are collaborating to plan the design of professional learning experiences that will connect their resources to improve teacher use of assessment data to make curriculum-based instructional decisions that will increase student learning. Through this planning grant, CenterPoint will: (a) kickstart a partnership to align their curriculum and assessments; (b) assign project managers to the project; (c) collaborate with Detroit education leaders to execute this professional learning model; (d) finalize the vision for resources needed to maximize implementation of an aligned system; and (e) draft a proposal to engage funders.

Description
As teachers grapple with translating college- and career- ready standards into daily classroom practice, they face multiple obstacles to implementation. Educators must have access to high-quality curriculum that is standards-aligned, access to high-quality assessments that are curriculum-aligned, and access to high-quality professional learning that helps bridge curriculum and assessment towards responsive instructional practices. There is a dearth of such professional learning and resources in the field, and this gap could lead to larger gaps in learning outcomes for children, which are exacerbated in underserved communities and have intensified even more so due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CenterPoint will provide teachers with professional learning opportunities that are designed to guide them in using assessment data to make sound instructional decisions aligned to high-quality curriculum to improve teacher effectiveness and, ultimately, student learning. Through this grant, CenterPoint will: a) partner with EL Education; b) develop a suite of assessment literacy tools and services; c) pilot test these tools and services; and d) evaluate and improve the efficacy of these tools and services.
