Project Title

As an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic for support of YouthTruth's Students Weigh-in Survey

Date

Sep. 10, 2020

Duration

6 months

Description

During the COVID-19 pandemic significant shifts have occurred in education and the learning experiences of students are no longer the same. There is currently little data available about how the pandemic is affecting their lived experiences. While there are surveys asking families and educators about how school closures are affecting education, there have been few surveys designed specifically for the 50 million students whose schools have closed across the nation. YouthTruth, a Corporation grantee, has the experience, expertise, and infrastructure to gather the unique perspectives of students about their experiences right now. With support from the Corporation, YouthTruth will execute the Students Weigh-In Survey which will: 1) gather insights from thousands of students about their learning experiences, social and emotional development, and well being; and 2) share the data and implications with the field – including educators, education funders, and the general public – to help ensure that students’ experiences and perspectives are central to the way schools are re-envisioned in the continuing wake of the pandemic.

Description

The voices of students, those who are at the center of the public education system, are largely missing from conversations around improving education outcomes and experiences. YouthTruth, a project of the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) began in 2000 with a mission to rigorously collect and comparatively present the views of students, as well as their family members and school staff so that school and district leaders can respond to their needs. To date, YouthTruth has surveyed over 906,000 students and 66,000 family and staff members across thirty-eight states. With renewed support from the Corporation, YouthTruth will broaden and deepen its engagement with schools and districts in order to amplify the voices of increasing numbers of students, family, and staff members; develop their products and services to support the interpretation of feedback; and share their learnings from student and family and staff surveys to inform the field about the experience of students and areas for improvement.

Description

Feedback from students, families, and educators, is a powerful indicator of student achievement. By harnessing stakeholder feedback through surveys, educators are also better able to drive improvements in their K-12 schools in a timely and efficient way based on real-time and representative information. YouthTruth, a program beginning in 2008 within the Center for Effective Philanthropy, is committed to developing and administering surveys of the highest-quality in district schools and working with partners to ensure that the feedback gathered is actionable. YouthTruth has carefully developed its instruments and surveyed over 650,000 students in grades three to twelve. With support from the Corporation, YouthTruth will reach a broader audience of schools and districts, develop and hone their Family Survey and Staff Survey operations, deliver high quality follow-up advisory services to deepen an understanding of the data gathered, and increase their visibility and shared learnings by participating in education conferences and speaking engagements.
