Center for American Progress

Project Title

As a final grant for core support of its immigration program

Date

Sep. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

Challenges at the southern border and the use of immigration as a wedge issue have led to an impasse on changing the federal immigration laws of the United States. For decades, the immigration laws of the United States have been outdated and unreflective of modern global and economic challenges. Since 2009, the Center for American Progress (CAP) has been using its research and policy expertise to educate policymakers on the need for federal reform of immigration policy and to help ground the national conversation in data. With Corporation support, CAP will continue its research and analyses. In particular, as the Supreme Court prepares to consider whether to terminate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)—which provides work authorization for 700,000 individuals who came to the United States as undocumented youth—CAP will tailor its research on DACA to strengthen public support for the program in the face of legal challenges.

Description

The combined health and economic crisis has exacerbated inequalities many communities have long endured. The Center for American Progress (CAP), a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, proposes exploring policy solutions that cut across K-12, postsecondary, and workplace training systems to empower Americans to find quality, sustained employment and employers to hire and retain skilled workers.Through support from the Corporation over the past three years, CAP has undertaken a participatory approach to rethink connections between the future of learning and working and set forth a new vision for workforce equity, amplifying models at the state and local levels that exemplify interventions to improve outcomes for all students. Continued support from the Corporation will allow CAP to continue deploying a coherent policy agenda for workforce development and workforce recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic via four goals: ensuring the safety net enables individuals’ employment goals; ensuring skills and training programs properly prepare individuals for the workforce; enabling workers and employers to access the labor market; and employing workers in quality jobs.

For core support of its immigration program

Date

Dec. 02, 2021

Duration

36 months

Description

The United States’ immigration laws are outdated, unreflective of contemporary global challenges, and often misaligned with the country’s humanitarian values. In response, immigrant integration advocates are calling for systemic changes that provide workable solutions for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers while also acknowledging the many factors driving migration and displacement. Since 2009, the Center for American Progress (CAP) has been using its research and policy expertise to educate policymakers on the harms of anti-immigrant policy and to help ground the national conversation in data and values. With Corporation support, CAP will continue to drive the immigration policy debate through research, analysis, and strategic collaboration with peers and other stakeholders.

Project Title

For support of an initiative to elevate the disability community’s participation in the democratic process

Date

Jun. 04, 2020

Duration

14 months

Description

Despite 25 percent of the United States population having a disability, the United States Government Accountability Office reports that between 60-80 percent of all polling sites in the past three presidential elections were inaccessible for individuals with disabilities. Unfortunately, national movements for more inclusive voting reforms often inadequately consider the implications that their policy proposals would have on the disability community. Founded in 2003, the Center for American Progress is a nationally acclaimed think tank that produces high-quality, nonpartisan research on policy solutions and ideas that span a wide range of issues. With Corporation support, the center’s Disability Justice Initiative will produce a series of briefs and infographics aimed at increasing the interest of the disability community in topics around voting rights and access, with the goal of increasing the community’s participation in upcoming elections.

Description

The combined health and economic crisis has exacerbated inequalities many communities have long endured. The Center for American Progress (CAP), a nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, proposes exploring policy solutions that cut across K-12, postsecondary, and workplace training systems, with an equity lens to ensure no segment of society is left behind. Removing barriers to higher education, and reimagining pathways to better economic opportunity for all young people requires a new roadmap. Through support from the Corporation over the past two years, CAP has undertaken a participatory approach to rethink connections between the future of learning and working and set forth a new vision for workforce equity, amplifying models at the state and local levels that exemplify interventions to improve outcomes for all students. This grant will allow CAP to expand its future of work research agenda so policymakers and practitioners can see the structural changes needed within education, workforce, and employment systems in order to understand redesign efforts that successfully prepare young people for the future of work.

Project Title

For core support of its immigration policy program

Date

Dec. 05, 2019

Duration

24 months

Description

Since 2017, the federal government has dramatically scaled back the refugee admissions program, dismantled the asylum system, and erected new hurdles for future legal immigration. Immigration advocates have thus been facing the dual challenges of having to defend against anti-immigrant policies and needing to advance a forward-looking, affirmative vision for immigration policymaking. Since 2009, the Center for American Progress (CAP) has been playing a critical role in educating policymakers on the harms of anti-immigrant policy and steering the national conversation toward a positive immigration narrative. With renewed Corporation support, CAP will help drive the current immigration policy debate through high quality research and field-wide collaboration; ensure the successful implementation of pro-immigrant policies at all levels of government; and shape the direction of the national conversation on integration, demographics, and migration.

For developing and promoting an equity-focused Future of Work agenda

Date

Mar. 07, 2019

Duration

10 months

Description

Our educational and training systems are failing to meet the needs of students, workers, or businesses, at the same time that a confluence of factors is changing the workplace and leaving too many American workers behind. The Center for American Progress (CAP), an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, proposes exploring policy solutions to these problems that cut across the distinct systems of K-12, postsecondary, and workplace training, with an equity lens to ensure that no segment of our society is left behind. With the support of this grant, they plan to: (1) organize progressive organizations and individuals to infuse a robust equity-centered approach to job training into the national and state legislative and administrative processes that are likely to proceed in 2019; and (2) lay the groundwork for a multi-year effort to rethink how we train people in America, breaking down silos between secondary, postsecondary and adult training, including retraining programs for displaced workers.

Description

Our educational and training systems are failing to meet the needs of students, workers, or businesses, at the same time that a confluence of factors is changing the workplace and leaving too many American workers behind. The Center for American Progress (CAP), an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, proposes exploring policy solutions to these problems. These solutions must cut across the distinct systems of K-12, postsecondary and workplace training, and must prioritize equity to ensure that no segment of our society is left behind. With the support of this grant, CAP plans to continue efforts to build coherence across communities focused on national policy related to K-12, higher education, and workforce systems. They plan to: 1. coalesce a group of leading thinkers focused on workforce equity to develop and effectively communicate practical approaches to new workforce systems; 2. develop a sequence of issue briefs and case studies to dive deeper into these new policies; and 3. write a series of op-eds and undertake other media and communications efforts to make the case for advancing equity in workforce development.

Project Title

For core support of its immigration policy program

Date

Dec. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

Over the past year, the United States has experienced a dramatic shift in federal positions on immigration. Many landmark, pro-immigrant efforts are being scaled back or terminated. The current Administration has been pushing an expanded enforcement agenda, as well as advocating for new policies that would restrict legal immigration, discontinue asylum programs, and reduce employment opportunities for immigrant workers. The groundbreaking immigration policies of the Obama Administration were not the result of a president’s nor a single party’s whims, but the sustained efforts of national and regional organizations over many years. Among the organizations working to advance positive, state and federal immigration policies is the Center for American Progress (CAP). CAP is a respected resource for policymakers, a hub for high-quality research on immigration, and a coordinating entity for research, communications, and policy work. With renewed Corporation support, CAP will continue to drive the immigration policy debate through research, analysis, and collaboration with key players.

For support of its immigration policy program

Date

Dec. 10, 2015

Duration

24 months

Description

In recent years, more and more state legislatures across the country have introduced policies intended to help integrate immigrants and provide them access to services, such as drivers’ licenses, health care, and in-state tuition at public universities, among others. The proliferation of these policies—a dramatic shift from the period before 2012 when most state immigration bills deterred integration efforts—has been due, in some part, to the research and analysis provided by policy organizations. These trusted groups can accurately assess the impact of proposed legislation—helping to inform policymakers and the public during such debates. Among the organizations working to advance state and federal immigration reform, the Center for American Progress (CAP) has acted as a resource for policymakers, a hub for new research and much needed facts on immigration, and a coordinating entity for research, communications, and policy work. With renewed Corporation support, the Center for American Progress will continue to drive the policy debate through research, analysis, and collaboration with key players; and monitor the implementation of new policies at the federal, state, and local levels.
