As a one-time grant to the Center for Education Market Dynamics to conduct a multiyear market analysis of OpenSciEd curriculum adoptions and students served
Date
Sep. 12, 2024
Duration
36 months
Description
The Center for Education Market Dynamics (CEMD) focuses on K-12 education and conducts market research through data analytics generating insights to help education leaders and policymakers improve curriculum adoptions leading to better student outcomes. They have developed a comprehensive database encompassing over 1600 school districts, representing 55 percent of all students and 68 percent of historically underserved students nationwide. This provides critical insights into who has access to high-quality instructional materials with more than half the students in the country. Using this extensive data collection bank, CEMD plans to conduct a multi-year market analysis of OpenSciEd curriculum adoptions across the country. They will develop data briefs and external reports for the education field.

Project Title
As a final grant for core support of LearnerStudio
Date
Mar. 07, 2024
Duration
30 months
Description
Much of our education system was designed for the industrial era and is not equipping students with the future-ready skills needed to achieve economic mobility and navigate our increasingly complex world. While we aspire to prepare all students for future success, and despite strong examples of innovations that do so, universal access remains elusive. For over three years, the Corporation has engaged a group of eighty funders in a dialogue about the need for change in response to the educational toll of the pandemic. As an outgrowth of that work, prior Corporation support enabled widely respected social entrepreneur Kim Smith to conduct an analysis of impact opportunities in the education sector. This spurred the creation of the LearnerStudio, a new organization seeded by the Corporation and the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, to address the need for a backbone organization to identify and fund high-leverage innovations, aggregate promising solutions toward more impactful change, and galvanize momentum among system leaders to accelerate the pace of transformation. Corporation support will enable the LearnerStudio to respond to today’s most pressing challenges with innovative learning solutions and partnerships that strengthen the education sector.

For core support of the LearnerStudio
Date
Mar. 09, 2023
Duration
12 months
Description
There is no shortage of education innovations nor of appetite on the part of communities for improvement, however systemic transformation remains elusive. For the last two years, the Corporation has engaged a group of funders in a dialogue about the need and complexity of change required to respond to the educational toll of the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of that inquiry, prior support enabled social entrepreneur Kim Smith, housed at Cambiar Education (Cambiar), to conduct an analysis of the landscape of innovation in the education sector and the implications for the future of learning as the system emerges from the pandemic. This analysis spurred the development of a new initiative, “the LearnerStudio,” to support the sector’s movement toward a learner-centered, whole child system. With seed funding from the Corporation, Cambiar will launch the LearnerStudio to create greater connectivity across the education ecosystem, organize stakeholders around lighthouse initiatives, and establish the knowledge infrastructure needed to galvanize shared vision and action toward a future learning system.

For project support of the THRIVE initiative to provide families with meaningful student data
Date
Jun. 08, 2023
Duration
12 months
Description
This is the first grant to Cambiar, a nonprofit focused on student equity, to implement Thrive, a multi-year initiative co-funded by the Walton, Bill and Melinda Gates and Overdeck Foundations. The problem the Thrive initiative aims to solve is that although evidence has shown that student data is available for families, it is not always user-friendly or equally accessible for low-income and marginalized families. Thrive will award grants to education organizations and conduct action research about how to provide parents with information in ways that are culturally responsive and effective. Specifically, Thrive will (a) provide sub-grants to twenty organizations producing solutions and methodologies to support parents with data about their children learning, (b) conduct a research report analyzing families’ demographics and how they use this data.

For a project to support a new cohort in the School Systems Leaders Fellowship
Date
Jun. 14, 2018
Duration
24 months
Description
Improving school systems across the country to deliver on the promise of providing an excellent education for every student requires the right leaders. Currently, the education sector suffers from a deficit of instructionally focused, cabinet-level leaders. The School Systems Leaders Fellowship (SSLF), a project of Cambiar Education, is focused on solving this human capital need. The Fellowship’s primary goal is to prepare high-potential education leaders to take on instructionally focused cabinet-level roles by exposing fellows to leaders in the field and key content to help them develop the necessary knowledge, skills, and opportunities to be effective cabinet-level leaders. With Corporation support, SSLF has grown the program to serve more Fellows over four cohorts. This renewal grant will support SSLF to build on this success and deepen the instructional leadership component of the program and further diversify the make-up of future cohorts.
