For nearly 80 years, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ (the Bulletin) iconic Doomsday Clock has served as the most notable public symbol of nuclear and other existential dangers. As the clock continues to edge closer to midnight, the need for the Bulletin’s authoritative source of clear, credible information on nuclear dangers has never been more crucial. The Bulletin is a trusted resource for scientifically grounded, accessible information on nuclear risks and disruptive technologies for the public. With renewed support, the Bulletin will continue to amplify expert research and analysis while also expanding digital media and accessible programming to deepen public engagement on nuclear issues. Under new leadership, the Bulletin will also broaden collaboration with the scientific community to produce unbiased content on nuclear dangers and help revitalize public dialogue around nuclear deterrence and interconnected existential threats.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (the Bulletin) is a media organizationthat provides knowledge-based and scientifically-grounded information to serve as an authoritative guide to managing existential risks. Its iconic Doomsday Clock, which moves to mark proximity to danger, draws attention to its mission. Over the next grant phase, the Bulletin will seek to support a new generation of experts and thought leaders and connect them to a global audience advocating for change.

Today’s nuclearchallenges are real, fast-changing, and require urgent public attention. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (the Bulletin)commissioned an artist,Mr. Pedro Reyes, to design a piece“Amnesia Atomica”to attract public attention to the deteriorating nuclear landscape. This grant will allow theBulletin toconvene a “mobilization festival” in New York City on May 20 and 21, 2022 as part of a weeklong display of “Amnesia Atomica”in Times Square.The mobilization festival will bring together innovative and engaging new and rising leaders in the nuclear policy and advocacy space and provide them with tables and kiosks as part of the exhibition. This gathering will also provide an opportunity to build a concerned community and increase cooperation amongthe exhibitors who work on nuclear issues.

Over the next grant phase, the Bulletin will develop new platforms and vehicles for engaging and motivating new and younger audiences. Using its iconic Doomsday Clock to draw attention to its mission, the Bulletin will strengthen its role as a ‘go-to’ site for exploring the intersection of science and global security.

These issues call for greater public attention and the need for expert analysis and factual information produced by trusted sources. Since its establishment in 1945, and using its iconic Doomsday Clock to draw attention to its mission, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (the Bulletin) has continued to provide assessments to inform the public and policymakers about the dangers posed by nuclear weapons, climate change, and emerging technologies and diseases. In the coming years and with support from the Corporation, the Bulletin will develop new platforms and vehicles for engaging and motivating new audiences.
