Description

China is now a powerful voice in the Western-led international financial institutions established at Bretton Woods and has also built a series of parallel institutions that are close to equaling their scale. The Boston University-based Global Development Policy Center (GDP Center) has forged partnerships in China and abroad to generate data, convene policy dialogues, and bring early-career fellows to the center of discussions around China’s role in the international economic order. With Corporation support, the GDP Center will continue to prioritize policy-relevant research to assess the implications of these developments and encourage constructive engagement between the United States and China to maintain global financial stability and prosperity.

China is a member of all Western-led international financial institutions established at the 1944 Bretton Woods conference and is now a powerful voice in shaping their operations. To gain leverage in these institutions, or perhaps supplant them, China has also built a series of parallel institutions that are close to equaling their scale. To assess the implications of these developments and encourage their contributions to global peace and prosperity, the Boston University-based, Global Development Policy Center’s (GDP Center) has forged partnerships in China and abroad to generate data for transparency and accountability, to conduct joint research, and to convene policy dialogues. The GDP Center seeks support from the Corporation to bring early career scholars and emerging leaders to the center and conduct a series of research projects that can contribute our understanding of China’s increasing role in the international economic order.

In addition, China has been influential in the creation of new international organizations. To study the role of these institutions in Asia and beyond. The Boston University-based, Global Development Policy Center’s (GDP Center) has formed partnerships in China and elsewhere to generate data for transparency and accountability, conduct joint research, and convene policy dialogues. The GDP Center’s “Global China Initiative” (GCI) has launched a “Global China Fellows Program” that bring early career, U.S. scholars, and emerging leaders to the GDP Center to help advance this mission.

Description

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have had detrimental consequences for the broader Middle East. Through the Costs of War project academic experts examine the budgetary and human costs of the wars since 2001, as well as the domestic and economic impact of the Global War on Terror. At the approach of the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the Costs of War Project will increase both research and communication on counterterrorism-based foreign policies affecting both democracy and peace and security globally. The project’s activities at Boston University will deepen public understanding of the consequences and alternatives to ongoing policies of armed conflict. The project’s upcoming scholarly writings and outreach will focus on the effectiveness of the ongoing conflicts and reconstruction in Afghanistan and Iraq. Corporation support will go towards staff costs, working meetings, reports, web design, interactive mapping, and media dissemination.
