Description
To address the diverse needs of students, many school districts have added staff to their classrooms to create co-teaching teams to improve student outcomes and reduce inequities. However, classrooms that have adopted this model have often failed to tap into the potential promise they hold. Co-teaching teams need to be coached on how to effectively maximize their collaborative capacity if they are to meet the needs of their students. Blue Engine has developed an evidence-based “team teaching” model that enables co-teacher teams, to accelerate learning for all students through year-long, job-embedded individual and group support for co-teachers and instructional coaches that are tailored to their specific context and goals. Through this final grant for general support, Blue Engine will implement their strategic plan to (a) drive impact through partnerships with schools and school systems; (b) analyze and strengthen their model effectiveness, and (c) build capacity and infrastructure that leads to a sustainable revenue model.

Description
Blue Engine accelerates student learning so that all students graduate from high school college- and career-ready—regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, language proficiency, or learning differences. Over the last ten years, Blue Engine has developed an evidence-based “team teaching” model that enables teachers working together on a team. With support and resources, “co-teachers” can shift their mindsets, improve teaching quality, and become better equipped to address the needs of all students, whether through in-person or virtual learning environment. Their work to help teachers create individualized learning experiences for students is especially pressing, as the K-12 education system deals with the unprecedented learning losses attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through this general support grant, Blue Engine will: a) secure partnerships with districts and schools; b) design and implement partnerships; and c) develop a multi-year plan.

Description
The current structure of high school classrooms, consisting of an average student–teacher ratio of 30:1, is a barrier to individualizing instruction for students. To solve this problem, Blue Engine, a nonprofit organization founded in 2010, has developed an innovative co-teaching model that leverages multiple adults in classrooms to ensure that students receive targeted support and effective differentiation. Through this grant, Blue Engine proposes to improve and expand their algebra focused co-teaching model by supporting at least thirteen co-teaching teams of existing classroom teachers, reaching at least 800 students. Blue Engine will also test mechanisms to spread co-teaching practices beyond algebra by working with school administrators to create mechanisms to transfer effective co-teaching practices school-wide.

Description
Blue Engine has developed an innovative “team teaching” model to give teachers access to trained Teaching Apprentices (TAs) for an entire school year. Teams of one lead or mentor teacher and three TAs have the instructional bandwidth to build knowledge of and relationships with all students, teach a more rigorous academic curriculum, and differentiate instruction. By restructuring classrooms through a human capital model that utilizes teams of teachers the organization works to: (1) accelerate student learning; and (2) develop a local pipeline of diverse educators to enter the teaching profession to drive student growth in their own classrooms. With this project, Blue Engine aims to increase consistency in and deepen student outcomes and enhance the instructional practice of TAs and mentor teachers. It proposes to do this by rigorously understanding the impact of its model on the instructional practice of both TAs and mentor teachers. Through this grant the organization will conduct a correlational analysis of its draft leading indicators; implement its model in New York City with increased consistency; and build an evidence base of its impact on teacher instructional practice.

Description
Blue Engine is a New York City-based non-profit organization focused on two main goals: 1) accelerating student learning and development in underserved high schools via differentiated instruction and personalized learning environments, and 2) developing a local pipeline of educators to enter the teaching profession through hiring and supporting Blue Engine Teaching Assistants (BETAs) to work with lead high school teachers in math and English language arts. Funding through this grant serves two purposes: 1) Provide general operating support to execute on strategic priorities to strengthen the organization and lay the foundation for scale; and 2) Support work to refine the development of lead teachers, a critical component of the Blue Engine model. To implement the strategic plan, Blue Engine will focus on improving its team teaching model, diversifying and increasing its revenue, and building up its infrastructure to prepare for scale. Project work includes designing, implementing, and refining the coaching and professional development strategies to optimize support for BETAs and lead teachers – the key components of their team teaching model.
