Project Title
As a final project support to deploy the "Foster Civil Discourse and Deliberative Democracy" resource
Date
Jun. 05, 2025
Duration
12 months
Description
Civil discourse on college campuses is declining at an alarming rate, exacerbated by growing political division and the fear of expressing opposing views. The Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) aims to address this by promoting deliberative democracy on campus through faculty development. Deliberative democracy fosters constructive dialogue, mutual appreciation, and thoughtful reasoning among students, rather than competitive debate. With support from the Corporation, ACUE will develop and implement a new four-module “Deliberative Discourse” professional development series, training 1,000 professors across twenty-sixinstitutions. This initiative will impact an estimated 120,000 students annually, equipping them with skills to engage in meaningful and respectful conversations. Previously, ACUE has certified over 42,000 professors across more than 500 colleges and universities, consistently demonstrating improved learning outcomes and reduced achievement gaps. Their mission is to deepen learning and promote critical thinking among students with research-based instructional approaches.

Description
The Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) was founded in 2014 to support student success and equity through quality instruction. ACUE awards the only nationally recognized credential in effective college instruction endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). ACUE partners with over 300 colleges and universities across more than fortystates, supporting over 16,000 faculty members. As a result, more than 1.8 million students are benefitting from evidence-based and equity-promoting instruction. Initial support from the Corporation allowed ACUE to strengthen the education and career readiness of over 7,000 students at City College of New York-CUNY. The current grant has helped more than 340 faculty across CUNY’s community colleges to strengthen their online instruction, benefitting more than 62,000 CUNY students. Continued support will go toward the inaugural National Collegiate Teaching Convention, hosted in New York City in early 2023 and in collaboration with CUNY. The convention will bring together nationally recognized civic and education leaders, teaching experts, and faculty, along with celebrity champions of postsecondary success to create a focus on the importance of quality instruction as part of the postsecondary completion and success agenda.

For support of faculty professional learning in a micro-credential, remote learning environment
Date
Sep. 10, 2020
Duration

Description
The Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) was founded to help millions more students succeed through effective instruction. The Corporation’s initial support successfully piloted an initiative to provide faculty in City College of New York a career guidance and readiness credential in effective instruction. Our renewal grant idea harnesses this forward movement and expands to all seven City University of New York (CUNY) community colleges. The quality of educational experience, particularly in an online or blended modality, will play an important factor in student and equity success this Fall because community college students have the most to gain from high-quality instruction. Specifically, ACUE will enroll and credential 420 faculty in one of their micro-credential courses for effective online instruction. This represents sixtyfaculty (two cohorts) at all sevencommunity colleges.Given CUNY’s typical teaching loads, this would benefit between 50,000 and 84,000 students. ACUE is partnering with CUNY leadership which will provide course facilitators and provide any stipends they deem necessary—representing important “skin in the game” from CUNY.
