Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles

Project Title

For general support

Date

Mar. 07, 2019

Duration

24 months

Description

For decades, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have been among the fastest growing racial groups in the United States. However, numerous challenges have precluded their full inclusion in democratic processes. Challenges include barriers to naturalization, voting rights violations, and partisan gerrymandering. Since 1983, Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles (“Advancing Justice-LA”) has been promoting deep and meaningful democratic participation among AAPI communities. With its wide-ranging Asian language capacity, Advancing Justice-LA is one of very few organizations in the country that can offer a comprehensive set of legal services to a diverse community of Asian Americans. With Corporation support, Advancing Justice-LA will work with various partners to educate AAPI communities in approximately eleven states about naturalization and the upcoming 2020 decennial census, as well as advocate for policies around voting and redistricting that will ensure that their voices are heard.

Project Title

For support of civic engagement and naturalization work targeting Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

15 months

Description

Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders (AAPI) are the fastest-growing racial group and immigrant group in the nation, yet many barriers continue to limit their ability to fully integrate into American society. In addition to language barriers and unfamiliarity with the voting process, which have been cited causes for discrimination at the polls, many AAPIs are unaware of financial resources and legal support available for naturalization. Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Los Angeles has been empowering AAPIs and increasing AAPI engagement in the civic and electoral processes since 1983. With Corporation support, Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA will increase awareness in the AAPI community of the benefits of and procedures for naturalization, lay the groundwork for AAPIs to effectively engage in the upcoming census and redistricting cycle, and expand its base of support through individual donors and others for its civic engagement work.
