Gaps in the knowledge sector underlie key issues of governance, citizen participation, and unemployment in the Arab region. The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) is an independent professional organization dedicated to strengthening social science research to address key challenges in the Arab region. With support from the Corporation and other funders, ACSS fosters a new generation of social scientists, integrates them into regional networks, and facilitates their policy-relevant research. With renewed support, ACSS will continue itsgrowthas an effective field-building institution. The grant will enable ACSS to offer early career fellowships, promote research and publications, organize issue-oriented working groups, andmaintaina lecture series in honor of the late Moroccan scholar Fatima Mernissi.

Description
The Academic Research Institute in Iraq is a longstanding partner of Iraqi scholars and universities. Its new project addresses social science methods and training at major Iraqi universities. In cooperation with the Arab Council for the Social Sciences, the proposed project will develop undergraduate instruction in liberal arts, as well as interdisciplinary methods at university departments within Iraq. The project will include junior faculty seminars, video lecture modules, and meetings of university leaders and administrators.

For Arab Futures: Reframing Knowledge in the Arab Region

This proposal is recommended in light of the Transnational Movements and the Arab Region program focus on strengthening problem-solving approaches through the activity of social sciences and humanities sectors within the region. The Arab Council for the Social Sciences (ACSS) seeks support for several key areas including (1) the production of new knowledge through two working groups: “Security and Insecurity” and “the Arab region, Iran and Turkey reconsidered”; (2) a postdoctoral fellowships program and two lecture series in honor of Hanna Batatu and Fatima Mernissi respectively; (3) surveying the landscape of knowledge production through new data collection and publication of the second report of the Arab Social Science Monitor; (4) dissemination of works produced through these programs both as print and e-publications as well as through lectures and workshops.
