Description
Young voters consistently vote at a lower rate than other age groups. This trend can be explained in part by exclusionary voting laws that reduce access to the franchise, including the rejection of student residency as a voting qualification, the removal of on-campus polling sites, gerrymandered campuses, and restricted absentee and provisional ballots. In honor of its namesake, a twenty-year-old college student who volunteered for the Freedom Summer 1964 to register Black Americans to vote, the Andrew Goodman Foundation was established in 1966 to encourage youth civic engagement and electoral involvement. Currently, its nonpartisan Vote Everywhere program works across 69 campuses in 26 states and Washington, DC, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). With Corporation support, the Andrew Goodman Foundation will provide student leaders with valuable skills to protect and extend voting rights nationwide and encourage voting.

Millennials are the largest voting bloc in the country, yet young voters consistently vote at lower rates than other age groups. In 2018, when voter participation was unusually high, only 36 percent of eligible voters between the ages of 18 and 29 turned out to vote, compared to the national rate of 53.4 percent. Low turnout among young voters can be explained in part by exclusionary voting laws that reduce access to the franchise, including the rejection of student residency as a voting qualification, removal of on-campus polling sites, gerrymandered campuses, and restricted absentee and provisional ballots. The Andrew Goodman Foundation works to strengthen American democracy by training students to advocate for electoral reforms that promote student voting and remove barriers to the polls. Working alongside students, faculty, administrators, and campus partners, the organization engages in year-round organizing, advocacy, and litigation in twenty-five states and Washington D.C. With Corporation support, the Andrew Goodman Foundation will provide student leaders with valuable skills to protect and extend voting rights across the country.

With 46 million adults ages 18-29 eligible to vote in the United States, young voters make up a major subset of the electorate. However, in addition to reduced emphasis on civic education in recent years, young voters face major obstacles to civic participation, including: lack of information on how to successfully vote, lack of places to get involved on college campuses, and even outright opposition to student electoral engagement by local election administrators and residents. The Andrew Goodman Foundation strengthens American democracy through nonpartisan voter registration and education, as well as by training students to advocate for practices that promote student voting. With Corporation support, the Andrew Goodman Foundation will continue to equip student leaders with valuable skills to protect and extend voting rights across the country.

Description
As highly mobile, nontraditional residents, young adults face unique challenges when it comes to registering and voting. They move more frequently than members of other age groups and must re-register to vote each time. Political campaigns are also less likely to contact youth voters or focus on issues that resonate with them. Coupled with a lack of trust in government and policymakers, these factors resulted in the youth voter turnout rate plummeting in 2014 to its lowest level in history–just 20 percent. Established in 1966, the Andrew Goodman Foundation works on college campuses to engage students in civic life and train them to educate their fellow students so that they can effectively address policy issues that matter to them. With Corporation support, the Andrew Goodman Foundation will register, educate, and engage college students on campuses across the country.
