Description

Social science research often remains confined to the scholarly community, unshared with its primary beneficiary, the public. Since 2017, the Alternative Policy Solutions program has brought together experts and students from different disciplinary backgrounds to provide a comprehensive look at locally identified policy issues. In designing policy solutions, the team conducts broad consultations with a range of officials, the private sector, scholars, and civil society.Seven million people have accessed its policy briefs, workshops, videos, podcasts and public events on issues including future modalities of work, climate and urban planning, and education.

Description

At a time of new leadership at the American University in Cairo (AUC), a core grant from the Corporation will support a presidential initiative to develop a major Middle East Studies graduate program in the Arab region. In addition to establishing new graduate degree programs, a complementary small grants program will support relevant scholarly projects and outreach in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and economic development in the region. The graduate program will include cross-disciplinary collaborations among numerous AUC departments and centers including Gender and Women’s Studies, Migration and Refugee Studies, and the Gerhart Center for Philanthropy, Civic Engagement and Responsible Business.

Description

The policy challenges confronting governments and societies across the Arab region are numerous, critical, and urgent. An initiative at the American University in Cairohas demonstrated success building policy research capacity by developing cadres of skilled analysts. The Public Policy Hub based at the School for Global Affairs and Public Policy combines experienced scholars with young, creative analysts, providing them with the necessary training and networks to craft rigorous policy solutions and communicate them to both policymakers and the general public. While the expertise is centered on Egypt, the issues tackled by the Hub include education, labor, public service reform, urban planning, and regional cooperation. Corporation funds will support staff costs, research, workshops, travel, publications, and online communication products.

In response to a Request for Proposals on problem-solving applications of social sciences, American University in Cairo will engage in three projects housed respectively at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP), the School of Humanities and Social Science (HUSS), and the Law and Society Research Unit (LSRU). At GAPP, a Public Policy Hub will develop a cadre of seasoned policy specialists while fostering creative solutions to challenges facing Egypt. At HUSS, a team of social scientists will collect and analyze data on the emergence of social movements in the aftermath of the Arab uprisings with a specific focus on Egypt and Jordan. At the LSRU, a project team led by an economist will examine current trends among religious and social actors.
