Date

Sep. 02, 2021

Duration

36 months

Description

The African Humanities Association emerged from the African Humanities Program (AHP), hosted by the American Council of Learned Societies since 2008. The Association, established in 2020, aims to build on the foundation of 449 early-career scholars supported through AHP fellowships, as well as the 50 or more mid-career and senior scholars who have reviewed applications, mentored fellows, and advised the program. With Corporation support, the Association will expand its scope beyond the five countries involved in AHP—Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda—through extension of the African Humanities Series to scholars from other African countries, outreachto other African scholarly associations, and publication and dissemination of a report on the impact of the AHP. The grant will also support training for Association staff and leadership in fundraising and management.

Project Title

For support of the International Association for the Humanities (MAG)

Date

Sep. 12, 2019

Duration

56 months

Description

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) is a private nonprofit federation of seventy-five national scholarly organizations, and the preeminent representative of American scholarship in the humanities and related social sciences. Although most of ACLS’s work pertains to the United States, a smaller but important part of its mission is its international activity. Two of its core international activities, one focusing on the former Soviet space and the other on Africa, have been created with support from the Corporation. The Humanities Program in Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine, known by its Russian acronym as MAG, advances humanities in these countries and helps connect scholarly communities in the region and internationally. The grant will enable MAG to hold its annual international conference in the summer 2020.

Project Title

As a final grant for fellowships in the humanities in Africa

Date

Dec. 06, 2018

Duration

63 months

Description

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) launched the African Humanities Program (AHP) in 2008 in response to the dearth of research opportunities for early-career African humanities scholars. Fellowships for doctoral dissertation and postdoctoral research and writing have been awarded on a competitive basis to 406 scholars working in universities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. This grant will support an additional ninety postdoctoral fellowships, thirty-seven travel fellowships for senior humanities scholars, six manuscript development workshops for fellows, and the publication of fifteen books in the African Humanities Series. Three assemblies will provide opportunities for the AHP community to explore how best to integrate AHP practices for supervision and mentoring into postgraduate training programs in African universities.

Project Title

For support of two conventions of the International Association for the Humanities

Date

Sep. 07, 2017

Duration

24 months

Description

Over the next two years, partner associations of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) will host conventions in the former Soviet Union. The conventions are modeled on learned society annual meetings that are held in the United States and act as international, multilingual forums for the open exchange of independent research and analysis. To ensure a regional balance among the attendees of the conference, the ACLS is working to solicit the participation of scholars from the post-Soviet region and from Europe and North America. Corporation funding will help support that participation.

Description

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) launched the African Humanities Program in 2008 in response to the dearth of research opportunities for early-career African humanities scholars. Fellowships for doctoral dissertation and postdoctoral research and writing are awarded on a competitive basis to scholars working in universities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. This grant will support an additional ninety-six early-career fellowships, thirty travel fellowships for senior humanities scholars, writing-for-publication workshops for fellows, and the publication of eight books in the African Humanities Series. Research and workshops on supervision of doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars and qualitative research methods will result in the publication of guidelines for supervision of young scholars and improvement of qualitative research.

Project Title

For support of the International Association for the Humanities Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (MAG-ASEEES) convention

Date

Dec. 10, 2015

Duration

24 months

Description

The work of transition from Soviet practice has been set back by armed conflict in Ukraine and, in Russia and Belarus, by escalating propaganda and repressive measures against independent researchers. In this context, the June 2016 Lviv convention planned by the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies and co-sponsored by the International Association for the Humanities (MAG) will gather 300 participants for 80 panel sessions on a theme of “Images of the Other.” The convention will comprise interdisciplinary, international discussion of ongoing research projects related to contemporary problems and their roots in the histories, cultures and societies of the region. The American Council of Learned Societies is seeking funding to provide coordination, oversight and support to allow MAG to assure participation of fifteen humanities scholars from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine.
