Date
Sep. 12, 2024
Duration
24 months
Description
Founded in 1957, the African Studies Association (ASA), based in the United States, promotes production and dissemination of interdisciplinary knowledge about African societies. With close to 2,000 participants, ASA’s annual meetings provide a platform for emerging scholars to engage with the wider scholarly community. This grant will enable ASA to competitively select twenty-five Corporation-supported early-career African scholars — twenty new and five returning — to participate in the 2024 and 2025 ASA conferences. This grant will support fellows’ participation in panels, online and in-person skill-building workshops on scholarly presentations and publishing, mentorship on publishing, and institutional networking visits.

Description
Founded in 1957, the African Studies Association (ASA) promotes production and dissemination of interdisciplinary knowledge about African societies. With close to 2,000 participants, ASA’s annual meetings provide a platform for emerging scholars to engage with the wider scholarly community. Spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ASA held virtual meetings in 2020 and 2021. A new hybrid format adapted from the virtual conference learnings will enable ASA to virtually deliveracademic and professional skills training to Corporation-supported scholars at the 2022 meeting, with a smaller cohort selected to attend in-person. At present, the 2023 meeting will revert to the traditional format. This grant will support competitively selected fellows to take part in scholarly panels, present papers, and benefit from mentorship and leadership training, as well as intensive workshops on scholarly writing and paper presentation.

Description
Responding to well-publicized gaps, the African Studies Association (ASA) aims to increase the number of articles published by emerging African scholars in international African studies journals. In collaboration with the editorial teams of its two flagship journals, African Studies Review and History in Africa, the ASA convenes Pipeline for Emerging African Studies Scholars (PEASS) workshops at its annual meetings. These workshops are designed to stimulate, solicit, and further develop high-quality journal submissions from early-career African academics. PEASS participants have an opportunity to work closely with senior scholars to re-work a pre-circulated draft article. This grant will support PEASS to expand participation in the 2019 workshop and to pilot an augmented PEASS model, whereby four scholars will receive support at two workshops, before and after article revision.
