Date
Jun. 05, 2025
Duration
36 months
Description
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), formed in 2008 and hosted by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), aims to improve the quantity and quality of research leaders in population and public health studies through PhD training and institutional support. To date, CARTA has enrolled 245 fellows, trained 263 faculty members and 681 staff, and enabled partner institutions to train 370 supervisors. Through core support, Corporation funding will support PhD and postdoctoral fellowships; research engagement through publications and media outputs; the establishment of multi-disciplinary research hubs at CARTA’s partner universities to strengthen their institutions; training for supervisors and university administrative staff; and training on incorporating CARTA’s interventions in partner universities to sustain the CARTA model.
Project Title
For support for the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) evidence website and its expansion to include data on Corporation-supported fellows
Date

Description
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) seeks to address the “Capacity Building and Scientific Impact Tracking System for Africa” (CB-SITS Africa) project that will track the outcomes and various forms of impact of select Corporation-supported projects. It builds on the CARTA Evidence project, a website that was launched in December 2022 to showcase the impact of the CARTA network. With additional funding, the approach will be deepened, improved, and expanded to elevate the visibility of African scholarship and produce data of value to a variety of stakeholders on the continent and beyond.

Description
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), formed in 2008 and hosted by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), aims to improve the quantity and quality of research leaders in population and public health studies. To date, 228 early-career researchers, selected from faculty and research staff of eight consortium universities and four research centers, have benefitted from the four-year doctoral fellowship program. Out of these fellows, 125 have graduated and 58 of the graduates have benefitted from the CARTA post-doctoral opportunities. With this core support grant, CARTA will intensify its main activities: award doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships and organize skill-building workshops; institutionalize CARTA research capacity strengthening interventions in member universities; create research hubs within African public universities; and enhance scholarly engagement with society.

For competitive postdoctoral fellowships open to graduates of the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa doctoral program
Date
Jun. 01, 2017
Duration
42 months
Description
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), begun in 2008 and hosted by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), aims to improve the quantity and quality of research leaders in fields relevant to population and public health. To date, 165 early-career researchers, selected from among faculty and research staff of the consortium’s nine universities and four research centers, have entered the four-year doctoral program, and more than thirty fellows have graduated.
With this grant, CARTA will intensify its postdoctoral program—referred to as “Securing the Future”—designed to help ease the transition of the graduates back into their university departments and allow them to continue to hone their research skills, even as they resumed their teaching and administrative responsibilities.
