Achievement Network
Project Title
For a project to build their capacity to support science teaching and learning
Date
Jun. 08, 2023
Duration
8 months
Description
The widespread influence of the National Research Council’s Framework for K-12 Science Education and many states’ adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide an opportunity to improve science instruction and achievement in the United States. However, many districts have a long way to go in their transition from rote teaching of facts to an integrated focus on the three-dimensional learning that the NGSS embodies. That shift will take many different efforts to achieve, but it can begin with the adoption of higher quality instructional materials. Achievement Network has helped schools and districts improve instruction in ELA and math for nearly two decades. Through this grant, Achievement Network will build their capacity to help schools and districts support stronger science instruction. This grant will enable them to: a) support a cohort of six staff members on the NGSS, b) adapt their current coaching tools and tactics to support ten districts in Kentucky adopt high-quality science curricula, and c) support learning about the NGSS to the larger group of Achievement Network coaches.
Project Title
For a project to design and pilot school coaching programs focused on tiered supports for differentiated literacy and math curricula and data systems to assess impact
Date
Jun. 04, 2020
Duration
18 months
Description
Schools are struggling to help their students meet grade-level expectations with college and career-ready standards, while also providing students with the necessary individualized supports. Building an in-depth understanding of the standards and effectively diagnosing and addressing students’ unfinished learning requires cohesive and sustained support for educators. Achievement Network partners with schools by providing professional learning opportunities for school leaders and teachers, as well as helping schools more fully implement high-quality standards-aligned instructional materials. Through this project, Achievement Network will build their capacity to support educators in partner schools through: (a) supporting foundational literacy skills, (b) supporting aligned and differentiated math instruction, and (c) updating their data systems.
Project Title
For a project with school districts to work on content-rich, equity focused professional learning and the adoption of high-quality curricula
Date
Dec. 06, 2018
Duration
18 months
Description
Despite the adoption of higher college and career standards across the country, far too few teachers and leaders receive the professional development needed to deliver instruction that meets the rigor of these standards. The Achievement Network (ANet) provides this support to teachers and leaders by working alongside school teams to strengthen their practice and culture of using learning standards and achievement data to get results in underserved communities. Through this renewal grant, they seek to improve the quality and consistency of their professional learning across their national network of partner schools. ANet has seen substantial impact in its 900 partner schools and hopes to scale and accelerate this impact in three key ways: 1) providing deeper professional learning on the implementation of high-quality curricula, 2) equipping their coaches with skills to address issues of equity and bias, and 3) refining their approach to progress monitoring and coach development with early stage partners.
Project Title
For a project to improve instructional support tools and resources for coaches, teachers, and school leaders
Date
Sep. 07, 2017
Duration
15 months
Description
Far too few teachers and school leaders have access to the professional learning they need to provide instruction that reflects the expectations of new, more rigorous standards. Without more and higher quality professional learning opportunities for educators, the United States could lose out on the promise offered by rigorous expectations for all students. Through this project, the Achievement Network (ANet) seeks to improve the professional learning opportunities and coaching strategy available to teachers and school leaders in its 700 partner schools. ANet plans to develop and analyze the effectiveness of multi-session professional learning sequences (rather than one-off sessions) as well as develop and pilot online learning modules used in a “blended” approach to improve its in-person coaching with teachers and school leaders.

Description
Across the United States, schools and school systems continue to struggle to advance educational equity so that every child, regardless of circumstance, has access to high quality teaching that prepares them for democratic citizenship and participation in the global economy. The Common Core State Standards (Common Core) represent both a great challenge and immense opportunity for our nation’s public education system, possessing the power to better prepare students for postsecondary school success but requiring a fundamental change for teachers and school leaders. For nearly ten years, Achievement Network has helped schools improve teaching and learning through effective use of data. With the advent of the Common Core, Achievement Network, with the Corporation’s support, has expanded its services to address the full teaching and learning cycle and tackle persistent challenges faced by schools and systems in the implementation of new and higher standards. Achievement Network requests support to execute the next phase of their growth, including the refinement and expansion of their core services—coaching, professional development, and assessments—and further development of emerging work to strengthen alignment between district systems and schools.
Project Title
For supporting America's educators in the era of higher standards
Date
Sep. 17, 2015
Duration
12 months
Description
An emerging organization, currently part of the Achievement Network, whose mission is to help educators negotiate the transition to higher standards and close the student achievement gap, has been founded by a small team of education professionals who provided the intellectual leadership behind the development of the nation’s highest impact Common Core open educational resources effort to date, EngageNY.org. The team developing this work believes that the way to closing the achievement gap is through changes in curriculum and instruction across the country—to affect “smart demand” (the decision making, instinct, and needs of teachers targeting the standards) and “smart supply” (the quality, rigor, and alignment of what gets made, reused and remixed, and made available for free). The Corporation’s grant will support the creation of high quality Common Core materials, aligned professional development opportunities, and direct intervention and ongoing support in districts and schools.
