Project Title

For core support to the Governance and Local Development Institute

Date

Dec. 14, 2023

Duration

36 months

Description

Predicted to be the first region in the world to run out of water, 60% of the Middle East’s population already has limited or no access to safe drinking water. The poverty, refugee, and climate crises are expected to exacerbate existing governance inadequacies. Research and policy development have been hindered by a lack of comparative indicators of governance processes at the local level. Over ten years the Governance and Local Development Institute (GLD), located at the University of Gothenburg, has developed tools to analyze variation in governance, public services, and economic participation, including its flagship Local Governance Process Indicators. With Corporation support, GLD will continue transdisciplinary, transregional research and capacity building, resulting in dissemination through podcasts, reports, academic articles in popular media, and one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders.

For governance and local development in the Middle East and North Africa

Date

Dec. 02, 2021

Duration

24 months

Description

There is a great deal of variation in governance and development outcomes across the Middle East andNorth Africa. The Program on Governance and Local Development at the University of Gothenburg will engage in a study to such fundamental questions as: why are some communities able to provide secure environments, good education, healthcare, and human development, while others fail to do so? With initial Corporation support, the project connected dozens of international scholars researching and communicating on decentralization, representation, reconciliation, and service delivery in Oman, Iraq, Tunisia, and other countries. The next phase will focus on capacity-building training through collaborative, policy-oriented reports and social science workshops, as well as an ongoing podcast series.

Project Title

For a project on local governance under decentralization in Oman and the Arab region

Date

Jun. 13, 2019

Duration

30 months

Description

The devolution or decentralization of authority and public services often appears as a top policy recommendation for Arab states. The Program on Governance and Local Development (GLD) at the University of Gothenburg will promote policy-relevant research on decentralization, initiating cross-national studies and analyses on the topic that will include experts and practitioners in the Arab region. With Corporation support, GLD will produce and disseminate policy-relevant research; strengthen and expand networks of scholars in the Arab region, sub-Saharan Africa, the United States, and Europe; and establish policy dialogues on different models of decentralization and local governance.
