How can storytelling change the future of work? Roadtrip Nation, a Carnegie Corporation of New York grantee, is an Emmy award-winning media and workforce development nonprofit that digitally chronicles the lives of career professionals to empower youth through the sharing of knowledge and experience.
With Corporation support, Roadtrip Nation has launched Build Your Future, a New York City-focused community hub for exploring local careers and possible pathways for students and jobseekers. Through “day in the life” videos, a self-discovery course, interviews, resources, and more, the platform offers career advice and guidance from more than 200 diverse professionals across the city, including NYC-focused Corporation grantees Here 2 Here and JobsFirstNYC, along with Roadtrip Nation’s own resources. Featured individuals include the CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, a 3D animator and designer, a CNN anchor, a backend software engineer at Spotify, and the cofounder of a tech company, among many others.
Build Your Future provides job seekers with tools to:
- Explore local career paths and possibilities. Discover which industries are hiring, what day-to-day work could look like, and inside perspectives on local opportunities.
- Hear career stories from fellow New Yorkers. From getting past obstacles and navigating new prospects, New Yorkers who have reached their own versions of success offer advice.
- Take the next steps to reach the next level. New York City-based resources that offer training, education, and support for young adults and career seekers.
Build Your Future primarily serves New York City area youth, roughly between the ages of 16 to 25, and those that support them, including career counselors, local college and workforce programs, and families and educators.
The Corporation’s investment is part of the Education program’s Focus NYC initiative aimed at designing more college and career opportunities for traditionally underserved students while building a national model for doing so. As reflected in Build Your Future, the initiative prioritizes information sharing and coordination among students, their families, and educators.
