The Third Founding is a nonpartisan initiative of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture devoted to renewing the cultural and institutional foundations of American democracy. It begins from the recognition that democracy depends not only upon laws, elections, and governmental institutions, but also upon a civic culture grounded in human dignity, mutual obligation, democratic agency, and the responsible exercise of institutional authority. Carnegie’s support would allow the Institute to publish and promote the Third Founding Declaration, launch the project publicly, convene scholars and civil society leaders, and begin building a broad network of people and institutions committed to the constructive and defensive work of democratic renewal.
