The Pharos Foundation is an independent UK academic organization set up to resemble research institutions like the Hoover Institution and the Santa Fe Institute, dedicated to principles of humane learning to address a dire need for intellectual curiosity, scholarly integrity and open, rigorous debate in academic and public life. It funds research fellowships for talented young scholars with internationally competitive salaries and an atmosphere of free inquiry. It also organizes public lectures on key questions in political and social life. Carnegie’s grant for general support would support Pharos’ further fundraising and its program of free public education, including the annual lecture series at the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford, and the Studies in Western Civilisation series of short courses.
