Description
Limited digital access and low adult literacy are closely linked challenges in the U.S., particularly in rural areas, where more than a quarter of residents lack broadband and literacy rates are significantly lower than average. As trusted community anchors, rural libraries often serve as the most reliable providers of internet access, technology, and educational opportunities. The Association for Rural & Small Libraries (ARSL) is a professional network representing library workers serving small, diverse communities across the country. With support from Carnegie, ARSL will launch Literacy Bridges, a two-year initiative that will support sixty-six Carnegie Libraries in small and rural areas of the U.S. to deliver programs integrating adult basic and digital literacy skills. In addition to providing financial support, the initiative will foster network-building through monthly professional development sessions to ensure library staff are prepared to develop sustainable programs that endure well beyond the initial grant period.
