Project Title

As a final core support grant of Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics

Date

Dec. 12, 2024

Duration

24 months

Description

Post-secondary education in mathematics does not adequately meet the evolving needs of today’s students, employers, or society, due largely to outdated teaching materials, methods, and content. Few undergraduates understand the many stimulating and vital ways mathematics is now used in diverse fields, and many students, especially those from under-served communities, experience mathematics as a barrier rather than a gateway. Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE) was created in 2014 with funding from the Corporation to understand how post-secondary education in mathematics can better meet students’ and employers’ needs and quicken the pace of change by identifying, advocating for, and implementing innovative and effective practices.

Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE) was created in 2013 with funding from the Corporation to understand how post-secondary education in mathematics might better meet students’ and employers’ needs and to serve as a catalyst for change by identifying innovative practices where they exist, advocating for such practices where they do not, and working with partners to implement and scale up effective practices. This grant supports further development, emphasizing increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the mathematical sciences, ensuring equitable opportunities in mathematics for all.

Project Title

For training and research on nuclear and international security

Date

Mar. 02, 2017

Duration

27 months

Description

As the central piece of U.S.-Russian relations, nuclear arms control has been largely dormant recently due to mistrust and antagonism. As the two countries hold the bulk of the global nuclear arsenal and continue their weapons modernization programs, better understanding of security objectives is critical. A project at the Center for Security Studies (CISSM) at the University of Maryland (UMD), College Park, has been working in a partnership with the Russian Institute of U.S.A. and Canada Studies to improve U.S.-Russian security understanding and relations. The project will continue analytical, training, and outreach efforts to manage shared risks associated with a wide range of dual-use technologies, including space and cybersecurity, and develop strategies to reduce political tensions among the United States, Europe, and Russia. An element of the grant will support U.S.-Russian student exchanges.

Project Title

For continued development of Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE Math), a project to transform post-secondary mathematics

Date

Jun. 09, 2016

Duration

30 months

Description

Transforming Post-Secondary Education in Mathematics (TPSE Math) was created in 2013 with funding from Carnegie Corporation of New York, in recognition of an urgent need to foster significant change in the teaching and learning of college math. Under the leadership of Phillip A. Griffiths and a small, voluntary group of other prominent mathematicians, TPSE Math has sought to develop both a compelling agenda for reform and an organization equipped to advance that agenda—one that fosters experimentation and collaboration, promotes best practices, works in partnership with others in the math community, and has the capacity to advance reform at a national scale With further Corporation support, TPSE Math developed a strategic plan (assisted by consultants at Parthenon-EY) and has taken the first steps toward implementation. This grant will provide support for full implementation of its strategic plan.
