Grants

Charter Fund, Inc.

Project Title

For one time support of Fund IV and Fund V

Date

Dec. 12, 2024

Duration

36 months

Description

Today’s students require schools that prepare them to succeed in college, achieve economic mobility, and participate actively in our democracy but access to this kind of education remains inconsistent. Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF) was founded in 2005 to identify the country’s highest-performing charter schools, fund their expansion, and increase their impact. CSGF’s network of 1,400 schools — many of which are among the highest-performing schools in their states — serve over 720,000 students in thirty states, representing about one in ninety-five of all public-school students in the United States. Nearly 75 percent of students attending network schools are from low-income households, and more than 90 percent identify as students of color. With Corporation support, between 2022 and 2023, CSGF opened 139 new schools across over twenty states in a wide range of urban, rural, and ex-urban communities. These high-performing charter schools will ultimately serve approximately 77,000 additional students – more than any previous year in CSGF history. Renewed support will allow CSGF to seed and scale high-performing charter networks primarily serving students from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Project Title

For new school development, innovation, and capacity-building through Fund IV

Date

Dec. 02, 2021

Duration

36 months

Description

In order to realize our vision for student success, we support the creation of innovative schools and programs that personalize student learning experiences, as well as the capacity-building of adults and systems in support of these efforts. We believe innovative, student-centered whole-school models can be most effectively scaled through partnerships with established portfolio organizations, which have rigorous processes for identifying, vetting, testing, and supporting schools through their initial scaling efforts. Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF) is one such organization and an important partner in extending the Corporation’s ability to support a wide array of innovative schools. Since its founding in 2005, CSGF has supported over 200 charter networks which collectively served approximately 535,000 students across thirty-six states in 2020-21.This renewal grant will support the implementation of CSGF’s Fund IV strategy.

Duration

Description

The New Designs to Advance Learning portfolio aims to catalyze system-level transformation through the proliferation of new school models that exemplify three core design principles: personalization, mastery, and positive youth development. With Corporation support since 2011, CSGF has launched and implemented a next generation schools investment strategy that has resulted in the creation of over 23,000 new seats in high-quality, personalized learning environments. With renewed support, CSGF will continue to expand access to these kinds of learning experiences by supporting new schools and accelerating performance across its portfolio.

Duration

Description

As program staff argued in the Opportunity by Design challenge paper, redesigning American high schools to create more powerful, personalized learning environments is a necessary step towards ensuring that more students graduate college- and career-ready. The Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF) is an important partner in this work. CSGF is committed to accelerating the creation of innovative school models in the charter sector and has a proven track record of selecting, investing in, and supporting high-impact charter operators, including “next gen” models that use time, technology and talent in innovative ways to personalize learning. This proposed grant to CSGF will provide support for their Fund III, in which CSGF will launch and scale innovative school models designed to prepare students for college and career success, as well as for participation in the changing global economy.
