Project Title
For a project to support smarter implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards focused on increased demand for high-quality instructional materials
Date
Dec. 06, 2018
Duration
15 months
Description
The lack of high-quality science instructional materials available to teachers and students poses a challenge to the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Achieve, the nonprofit organization that has spent one decade leading the effort to help states make college and career readiness a priority played a significant role in the development and adoption of NGSS. Now, Achieve is working to improve the supply and demand of science instructional materials, and supporting states and districts to help them implement the NGSS. Through this renewal grant, Achieve will: 1) review science units and provide feedback to developers, including OpenSciEd instructional units, 2) create and sustain a network of districts using NextGen TIME to select and implement instructional materials, 3) advise states and districts on science implementation work, 4) create a tool to evaluate NGSS high-school science courses, and 5) increase the number of individuals that deliver EQuIP-focused professional learning sessions to educators.

For a project to support smarter implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards focused on greater supply and increased demand for high-quality aligned science instructional materials

Description
Achieve played a significant role in developing and supporting the adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), in partnership with many other stakeholders. Developing the NGSS was just the first step. The next is implementing and enacting them in K-12 classrooms across the nation. The lack of high-quality, aligned instructional materials readily available to teachers and students poses a significant threat to sustainable progress toward better science education for all students. Through this proposal Achieve will address all of these issues. Specifically, it will (1) ensure that a greater supply of high-quality NGSS-aligned instructional materials becomes available; (2) increase demand for high-quality, NGSS-aligned instructional materials from teachers, schools, districts, and states; (3) strengthen the implementation of science standards at the state level; and (4) help unify the science education and education reform fields around NGSS implementation.

As a final grant for network collaboration to support state adoption and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Description
The effect of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS or Standards) on improving science instruction and bolstering STEM education across the country is beginning to show significant promise. The final version of the NGSS was released in April 2013. This achievement was led by Achieve, joined by the National Research Council and a broad-based network of science, technology, engineering and math advocates in business and industry, academia, and the scientific community under the leadership of twenty-six state teams. These Standards represent the scientific and education communities’ best, and most current, thinking on what K–12 students need to know and be able to do in science to be prepared for college and career in the 21st century. But developing the NGSS was just the first step. Implementing the standards in K–12 classrooms across the nation is the challenge that still remains. To date, fifteen states representing almost 33 percent of the public school population have already adopted the NGSS. With renewed support from the Corporation, Achieve will continue working with states as they move forward on adoption and implementation, often helping states assess when and if they are ready for adoption and what steps and conditions they need to have in place to ensure successful adoption, implementation, and sustainability.
