Founded in 1804, the New York Historical Society is New York City’s oldest museum. As one of the nation’s most renowned historical research libraries, the New York Historical Society collects, preserves, and interprets materials relevant to national, state, and local history. It also maintains and cultivates partnerships with a wide range of organizations citywide to bridge the gaps between education and civic engagement, and it provides tools to expand people’s vision and understanding of American history. With Corporation support, the New York Historical Society will continue to expand its educational programs, offer resources in civics, naturalization, and history to thousands of students and teachers, and support the celebration of America’s semiquincentennial anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The museum will prepare programming for the 250thbirthday of the United States and launch a digital project called On Our 250th, inviting Americans to share their hopes for American democracy.

Founded in 1804, New-York Historical Society (the Society) is one of the nation’s most renowned historical research libraries, comprising a vast collection of materials on the history, culture, diversity, and continuing evolution of New York and the nation. In the spring of 2019, the Society launched The Academy for American Democracy, a groundbreaking educational initiative that aims to transform the way history and civics is taught to and understood by sixth-grade students, who acquire the knowledge and tools to meaningfully participate in American democracy. With Corporation support, the New-York Historical Society will deliver programming through the end of the school year—employing novel approaches to reach students remotely during the COVID-19-related school and Museum closures—as well as support rigorous program assessment during the summer and full-scale delivery in the 2020-2021 school year.

Description
Over the past twelve years, the New York Historical Society (NYHS) has been partnering with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to host naturalization ceremonies for thousands of new Americans. Citizenship affords immigrants higher economic mobility, greater family stability, and stronger economic outcomes for their local communities. In 2017, NYHS launched an innovative initiative to leverage its considerable archival and museum collections to provide free civics and American history workshops to legal permanent residents who are preparing for the USCIS Naturalization Test. The first project of its kind among peers nationwide, NYHS has prepared more than 1,000 eligible applicants with high-quality civics education. With Corporation support, NYHS will expand its educational course offerings, including new online learning resources and a program to train other naturalization service providers.
