Project Title
As a final grant for general support
Date
Sep. 14, 2023
Duration
15 months
Description
Engaging families in their children’s education is critical for improving students’ academic outcomes, yet it often takes a back seat due to limited resources, inadequate teacher skills, and time constraints. To address this issue, PowerMyLearning, a national nonprofit organization, collaborates with schools and districts to strengthen the learning connections among students, teachers, and families. PowerMyLearning, offers two main programs: Family Playlists, a technology-driven platform that facilitates interactive homework assignments in math and English language arts, which allows students to teach their families what they’ve learned, and professional development for teachers to enhance instruction and involve families effectively. This final general support grant will enable PowerMyLearning to expand its reach, provide professional learning to educators, and complete an impact evaluation of its early-grades program on math achievement and socio-emotional skill.

Description
Many schools struggle to implement family engagement interventions that enable students, teachers, and families to function as a learning system. Relationships between teacher, student, and families typically look like a line, connecting teachers with students and students with families, and have little impact on student learning. Founded in 1999,PowerMyLearningis a national nonprofit organization partnering with schools and districts that fosters a “triangle” of learning relationships between students, teachers, and families. Family Playlists is their interactive homework assignment tool and learning platform. With continued support from the Corporation,PowerMyLearningwill continue to spread this triangle approach in schools and districts across the country. They plan to 1) roll out their early-grades Family Playlists in K-2 and 2)develop and test a district partnership model for their capacity-building programs which focus around three themes: socio-emotional learning, culturally relevant education, and learning recovery.

Through this renewal grant, PowerMyLearning will innovate on their direct program model, Family Playlists, set up for rapid growth by improving marketing infrastructure, strengthen their evidence base, and support continuous improvementand organizational capacity.

Description
Across the U.S., the relationships between teachers, students, and families typically looks like a line connecting teachers with students and students with families. On the teacher-student side, teachers are taught how to interact with their studentsbut not their families. On the student-family side, schools invite families in for “involvement” events like volunteer events that have no impact on student learning. For effective family engagement, we must bend this line into a triangle where students, teachers, and families work together as a team. Now more than ever, families are being asked to play a much larger role in their children’s education given the disruptions to schooling that are occurring due to COVID-19. PowerMyLearning (PML), a national non-profit with 20 years of experience, substantiates a core theory: by giving teachers the know-how and tools to get families involved in their children’s learning, student’s academic outcomes can dramatically improve.Withsupport from the Corporation, PML will continue to leverage their expertise working with family engagement and learning technologies to lead an equitable and inclusive recovery for our country’s students during this time of distance and hybrid learning.

Project Title
For support of a strategic evidence plan for family playlists and optimizing the adoption of family playlists
Date
Sep. 13, 2018
Duration
24 months
Description
Children learn not only with the teachers in their schools, but with the families in their homes and communities. Research indicates that learning happens best when what is happening in school is reinforced by what is happening in students’ homes. This relationship can be challenging however in high poverty communities, where families often lack the time, knowledge or skills to help their children with their schoolwork. Founded in 1999, PowerMyLearning has emerged as a national nonprofit organization partnering with schools and districts to meet the needs of every learner by leveraging technology that fosters a “triangle” of learning relationships between students, teachers, and families. Support from the Corporation led PowerMyLearning to develop Family Playlists, a program for interactive homework assignments that cultivate teacher-parent ties and communication channels. With continued support from the Corporation, PowerMyLearning will design a Strategic Evidence Plan for Family Playlists, optimizing the adoption process for teachers and refining their triangle model to build evidence for the field.

For a project to expand the adoption of personalized learning through the development and delivery of an enhanced instructional platform, and online professional learning resources
Date

Duration

Description
In recent decades, the U.S. has made important advances in strengthening its public school system, as evidenced by record high graduation rates. Despite these gains, new approaches remain necessary in order ensure that all students are ready for the demands, and opportunity, of college and career. PowerMyLearning addresses this challenge by leveraging technology to transform classroom practice and strengthen the learning relationships among students, teachers, and families. Underlying this work is PowerMyLearning’s free web platform, launched in 2011 and now with users in over 40% of schools nationwide. The proposed project builds on PowerMyLearning’s established school-based partnership model and will enable the organization to 1) Enhance its predominantly in-person delivery model to make it more scalable within the organization’s operating regions, and 2) Begin to drive adoption of innovative learning designs nationwide through active partnerships and thought leadership.
