New Teacher Center
Project Title
For a project to continue the development of an English Language arts curriculum-based coaching program
Date
Jun. 03, 2021
Duration
24 months
Description
Research shows that traditional professional learning is not meeting the needs of teachers, nor significantly improving teacher effectiveness, as it does not provide educators with access to supportive and flexible curricula that help develop their craft and effectively implement high-quality instructional materials, while also addressing the complex needs of diverse learners. The New Teacher Center (NTC) has achieved significant impact in student learning gains and effective teacher practice by focusing on mentoring and instructional coaching. Through job-embedded, curriculum-based coaching and professional learning circles, NTC builds capacity and supports educators to ensure coherence and improve student outcomes. Through this renewal grant, NTC will continue to develop their English language arts coaching observation and feedback supports by a) developing a systems-level diagnostic assessment for curriculum-based professional learning and b) creating a suite of professional offerings based on Odell Education’s high school ELA curriculum.

For a project to develop a curriculum implementation coaching program aligned to Expeditionary Learning Education’s high-quality K-8 Language Arts curriculum and pilot in Detroit and New York City Public Schools
Date
Jun. 13, 2019
Duration
24 months
Description
Although in recent years the field has advanced significantly to recognize the importance of adopting high-quality instructional materials, there is demand in the field to address the gap between their adoption and strong implementation. The New Teacher Center (NTC), an education nonprofit founded in 1998 with the mission to disrupt the predictability of educational inequities for underserved students, recognizes this need in the field to support districts to effectively implement high-quality instructional materials. Through this grant, NTC will: (a) collaborate with Expeditionary Learning Education (EL Education), to support teachers implementing EL Education’s K-8 English Language Arts curriculum, highly rated by EdReports for its quality, usability, and alignment with the college and career-ready standards. NTC will also design job-embedded professional learning to enable teachers to effectively implement EL Education’s curriculum. They will train coaches who will support teachers, by piloting the new coaching model in two districts that have adopted EL Education’s curriculum: New York City and Detroit Public Schools.

For a project to field test and refine the School Leadership Program working with three districts to develop principals as instructional leaders coupled with support for other key district personnel to lead school change, improve student achievement, and

Duration

Description
Research shows that school leaders are the key driver of change in their schools, but they generally receive very little professional learning and ongoing support to truly build their instructional leadership skills and support for a distributed teacher leadership model. Through its work with over 500 districts since its founding in 1998, the New Teacher Center (NTC) knows firsthand what the research has shown – that school leader and teacher development systems are too often siloed, disconnected and not impactful. NTC’s new strategic plan recognizes both the need in the field and the powerful impact that can be realized by developing a more focused, integrated approach to school leader and teacher development. With this grant, NTC will field test their updated School Leadership Program to enable them to continue to refine and position the program for scale.

For an i3 matching grant for 'Improving Teacher Effectiveness Through Comprehensive Induction'
Date
Jun. 09, 2016
Duration
11 months
Description
The New Teacher Center’s (NTC) comprehensive teacher induction program has been proven to increase teacher retention and student achievement for those pupils taught by a new teacher receiving two years of NTC’s mentoring support. NTC has found that to truly be successful, systems leaders must be invested in and have the capacity to support the development of new teachers. In November 2015, NTC was selected as one of the highest rated applicants for the U. S. Department of Education Investing in Innovation (i3) Scale Up Grant. Through this grant, NTC will be able to scale its new teacher induction and mentoring model to six high-need districts. NTC will also be able to build organization and partner capacity at the systems-level to support and sustain the model. This matching grant will provide stipends for NTC staff to deliver professional development for mentors, coaches, and school leaders responsible for supporting new teachers and implementing the model.
