Asia Foundation
Project Title
As a one-time grant for a project on China's Belt and Road Initiative in Southeast Asia
Date
Jun. 13, 2019
Duration
66 months
Description
China’s growing international presence is reflected in the scope and magnitude of its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Through trade, investment, aid, and loans, China is changing international dynamics in Asia and beyond. The BRI’s complex and unclear foreign and economic policy objectives have raised concerns within the international community, not least in the United States, which remains committed to its national interests and alliances in the region. To examine these dynamics and their implications, the Asia Foundation will focus on the impact of BRI projects in select Southeast Asian countries (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines). Through empirical surveys that assess local community and civil society perceptions of BRI investments, the project will demonstrate how this far-ranging Chinese initiative is impacting peace and security within the region, as well as Sino-U.S. relations. The project will result in a publication.

The Asia Foundation plans to build on the success of its signature foreign policy study, “Asian Views on America’s Role in Asia,” by convening follow-on events focused on “The Future of Asia.” Through a number of meetings and dialogues, Asia Foundation will bring together emerging experts from sub-regions of Asia to discuss development challenges across the region. The goal of this work is to identify the critical issues confronting younger populations in Asia. Additionally, another ongoing project supported by this grant involves the publication and delivery of training books for Afghan university students to twenty-two new Education Resource Centers throughout the country.

For the project "America's Role in Asia 2016: Asian Views about the Future of Asia and U.S. Interests in the Region"
Date
Jun. 09, 2016
Duration
28 months
Description
In its fifth iteration, the “America’s Role in Asia” (ARA) report, produced by The Asia Foundation, aims to provide insight into issues directly relevant to the United States’ political, economic, and security interests in the region. In contrast to the majority of policy studies on Asia in the United States, the ARA report emphasizes Asian views in addition to their American counterparts. For the 2016 ARA report, The Asia Foundation will convene Asian sub-regional focal groups of regional foreign policy experts, including a younger generation from civil society and policy institutes. The Foundation will build upon its previous reports and its extensive relationships and access to U.S. and Asian leadership. With Corporation support, the report will expand to include additional thematic areas and to increase its focused dissemination to the new administration and the 115th Congress. The project is directly related to the Global Dynamics initiative and provides parallels to the Bridging the Gap initiative.
