Description

Currently education systems are experiencing a crisis in teacher education that critically affects how prepared students for success in the sciences and how prepared teachers are to get them there. With research showing that half of all teachers leave the profession within the first five years, with the rate being highest for science and math positions and in high-poverty schools, improved preparation of secondary science and math teachers in high-need districts must be a top priority. Trellis is the only induction program in the country that is content-specific, promotes an integrated long-term trajectory of six years for new science and math teachers, and is supported by research in teacher retention. Through this renewal grant, Trellis will: a) support a community of Teacher Scholars in six districts in California, b) support a cross-district community of Mentor Fellows, c) conduct formative evaluations of the program, and d) strengthen existing district and teacher preparation partnerships.

Date

Jun. 14, 2018

Duration

Description

Trellis, a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 to ensure all California students have exceptional science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers, is pioneering a research-based solution to the demand for math and science teachers. Trellis supports teacher preparation providers and partner school districts to create cohesive pathways for preparing, developing, and retaining successful mathematics and science teachers over a six-year trajectory. With Corporation support, Trellis started a community of Mentor Fellows who provide specific mentoring support to early-career teachers. This renewal grant builds on that work and will support Trellis to support early career secondary math and science teachers, begin formative evaluation work, deepen partnerships with districts, and strengthen Trellis’s capacity by increasing its leadership team.

Duration

Description

Trellis Education (Trellis) is pioneering a solution to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) teaching crisis. Launched in 2015, Trellis is enacting a research-based, six-year trajectory of learning and support for those entering the secondary STEM teaching profession, beginning with bolstering pre-service work in partner teacher preparation programs and culminating in mentoring of new teachers and National Board Certification. By focusing on improving rigor and cohesion in existing programs, Trellis is helping to build a pipeline of excellent, ambitious STEM teachers who stay committed to the teaching profession and raise science and math achievement for a new generation of students. Support from the Corporation will enable Trellis to build, study, and scale their work in five California school districts, including (1) to determine the key components of building and implementing the first two years of a highly-effective STEM-specific, long-term teacher mentoring model; (2) to build a community of mentors who provide targeted, STEM-specific mentoring support to early-career teachers; and (3) articulate and begin to implement action plans for partner districts and schools to financially sustain and expand long-term mentoring for early-career STEM teachers.
