The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) has a longstanding reputation for research, analysis, and policy and public outreach to reduce nuclear risks. NTI partners with governments, current and former policymakers, and multinational organizations to promote dialogue and implement policies to reduce the risk of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism, as well as to increase strategic stability. With renewed support, NTI’s nuclear program will explore avenues to increase public engagement on nuclear issues, analyze the convergence of AI and emerging technologies with nuclear security, and make new recommendations to reduce nuclear risks via arms control and nonproliferation.

Russia’s war in Ukraine and the breakdown of U.S.-Russian relations pose significant challenges to a global nuclear order that was already being tested by weapons modernization in the United States, China, and Russia, as well as other nuclear possessor states. The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) has a longstanding reputation for research, analysis, and policy and public outreach on actionable steps to reduce nuclear risks. NTI partners with governments, current and former policy makers, and multinational organizations to promote dialogue and advocate for and implement policies to reduce the risk of nuclear proliferation and nuclear terrorism, as well as to increase strategic stability. With renewed funding, NTI’s nuclear program will continue these activities and begin a new initiative to build political will for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

This grant will support the second season of the acclaimed “At the Brink” podcast hosted by William Perry’s granddaughter Lisa Perry and featuring the former Secretary of Defense. The podcast offers personal, behind the scenes stories of the people on the front lines of nuclear security. Their stories reveal experiences in preventing nuclear catastrophe and provide insights into what is needed to step back from the nuclear brink.

Perry project, an initiative to stimulate an informed and broadly-inclusive public conversation about the role of nuclear weapons in today’s world.

Description
The United States and Europe are registering declines in democratic indicators, including trust in political institutions, political participation, media freedoms, and civil liberties. Among the possible consequences of this decline is an increased risk of conflict and mass violence in the Euro-Atlantic region, including nuclear conflict. Led by David Hamburg, president emeritus of Carnegie Corporation (1982-1997) and now a member of The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) advisory team, this project will examine the risks and causes of the erosion of democracy, the potential consequences of this erosion — including nuclear conflict in the Euro-Atlantic region, and to develop recommendations for strengthening democracies to help prevent conflict and mass violence With Corporation support, Dr. Hamburg we will survey relevant scholarship in this area; identify key analytic questions; refine the focus to ensure that the work will add value; identify individual and institutional partners; and establish a working group that will help develop the project methodology, work plan and division of labor.

The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) plays a key role in driving international policy discussion on nuclear weapons and the risk of nuclear terrorism. This two-year grant will include general support funding for NTI’s work to reduce the risk of nuclear war, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and nuclear terrorism. Their two-year organizational work plan includes facilitating a continued Global Dialogue on Nuclear Security Priorities, updating and disseminating the NTI Nuclear Materials Security Index, which includes cyber threats to nuclear facilities, updating deterrence concepts for today’s threat environment, reducing radiological threats that result from the easy availability of poorly disposed of industrial equipment, and promoting global capacity building around verification.

Description
The Perry Project, housed at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, seeks to increase public awareness of nuclear dangers through education of next generation leaders. The project was founded three years ago by William J. Perry, the 19th Secretary of Defense. Corporation support will allow the Perry Project to build, through an online course and web videos, understanding of today’s nuclear challenges among those that have come of age after the Cold War. Through a partnership with Stanford University, the project has begun to create a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Living at the Nuclear Brink: Yesterday and Today,” which will be freely available online through Stanford and enable thousands of people to learn about nuclear issues without regard to location, nationality, age, or ability to pay tuition. Corporation support will enable this collaboration and produce other short videos to build greater public understanding of the nuclear challenge.
