Carnegie Corporation of New York announced today that William Moon will be joining the foundation as vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) starting August 15, 2022. In this role, Moon is responsible for working with senior management and the endowment’s in-house investment team to oversee all accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.
Moon comes to the Corporation from the Russell Sage Foundation, where he has served as CFO for the past four years, the latest in a series of strategic financial management positions he has held in the nonprofit sector. Moon will succeed Robert J. Seman, vice president and the current chief financial officer, who plans to retire at the end of 2022 after more than 32 years of service to the Corporation.
“The Corporation conducted a highly competitive, national search and was gratified to receive hundreds of applications for the CFO position. In the end, the board of trustees was greatly impressed by William Moon’s management skills, analytical thinking, and depth of experience, making him the clear choice,” said Governor Thomas H. Kean, former governor of New Jersey and chairman of the Corporation’s board of trustees. “We also want to thank Robert Seman for more than three decades of service. He is among the most respected employees of the Corporation, known for his integrity, wisdom, and strategic counsel. On top of his regular duties, Bob was appointed to lead an administrative team in charge of the foundation’s day-to-day management after the sudden death of our president, Vartan Gregorian, in April 2021. As always, Bob rose to the occasion, and his contributions have been invaluable as we prepare for new leadership under president-elect Professor Dame Louise Richardson, who joins the Corporation in January 2023.”
Founded in 1907, the Russell Sage Foundation (RSF) is dedicated to the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States through strengthening the methods, data, and theoretical core of the social sciences. Longstanding collaborators, RSF and the Corporation are currently partnering on a series of research projects, overseen by RSF, that focus on the barriers to immigrant integration in American society.
“I am honored to join Carnegie Corporation of New York and to contribute to its ongoing programs in education, international peace, and democratic values,” said William Moon, the Corporation’s incoming chief financial officer. “As CFO, my goal is to ensure that the Corporation’s fiscal policies and procedures support and maintain its strong fiscal reputation. I am eager to collaborate with the staff and trustees to continue the Corporation’s excellent work.”
An active member of the Foundation Financial Officers Group (FFOG), a nonprofit membership organization of financial and investment officers of large private foundations, Moon serves as chair of its tech council as well as cochair of the compensation survey. Before assuming the CFO position at the Russell Sage Foundation, he held financial and accounting roles at nonprofits such as the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the College Board, and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
A certified public accountant, Moon began his career as a senior associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked with a wide range of for-profit companies and nonprofit organizations. He earned a BS in accounting and an MBA at Binghamton University–State University of New York.
