Wangui Muigai

Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies and History, Brandeis University

Wangui Muigai

Wangui Muigai is assistant professor at Brandeis University, where she holds joint appointments in the department of History, African and African American Studies, and the Health: Science, Society, and Policy Program. A historian of medicine and science, her research examines how race, gender, and age have shaped experiences of birth and death, sickness, and health. Through her scholarship and teaching, Muigai brings historical insight into contemporary dilemmas in health and health care. Awards supporting her work include serving as a History Fellow at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Washington, D.C. Muigai holds an AB from Harvard University and MA and PhD degrees from Princeton University.

Her project, “Infant Mortality, Race, and the American Roots of a Health Inequality,” explores the tragic experiences and troubling explanations of Black infant death in the United States from the 19th century to the present day.
